Thousands to Converge on Washington, D.C. for 'D.C. Health Data & Innovation Week'

WASHINGTON, June 4, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Health data innovation takes center stage at the second Washington, D.C., Health Data & Innovation Week, taking place June 2-7. More than 2,000 health innovators, physicians, nurses, consumers and patients from across the District and the United States are joining with federal agencies and top health technology and innovation leaders for a week of hands-on events and dialogue about how best to use health data and the technology to manage it. 

Following the event's success in 2011, Mayor Vincent Gray has officially declared "D.C. Health Data and Innovation Week" for a second consecutive year, establishing the nation's capital as an epicenter of health innovation to improve health and reduce health inequalities in the District of Columbia and the nation.

Health 2.0′s Washington DC HD&IW Code-a-thon: Preventing Obesity

The activities began Saturday and Sunday, June 2 and 3, when the Health 2.0 Washington DC HD&IW Code-a-thon: Preventing Obesity (http://www.health2con.com/devchallenge/washington-dcs-hdi-code-a-thon-preventing-obesity/) returned to the Kaiser Permanente Center for Total Health. Developers, designers, physicians, nurses and health care leaders focused on applications that target the growing challenge of obesity. Using raw data sets provided by the government and other organizations, the teams competed for $10,000 in prize money to build new applications and tools for mobile platforms. Experts from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's MyPlate.gov initiative, Kaiser Permanente Mobility Center of Excellence, Massive Health, Inc., and CommunityCommons.org supported developers with the best science and large health system execution expertise. The event builds on the momentum of The Weight of the Nation public health campaign led by Kaiser Permanente, HBO (Home Box Office), the Institute of Medicine, the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation to address America's obesity epidemic to date.

On Monday, June 4, the HealthCamp DC unconference (healthca.mp/dc) also takes place at the Kaiser Permanente Center for Total Health. Continuing the innovation learning approach from the previous days, physicians, nurses, consumers, technologists, health system and policy leaders, payers and suppliers will create session topics the day of the event focused on "Empowering Patient Engagement." The unconference process and the Center for Total Health itself will create a flexible and energetic collaborative environment for participants.

Following HealthCamp D.C., the patient voice — in the form of the Walking Gallery art event —returns to the Kaiser Permanente Center for Total Health. Artists from throughout the nation will display the stories they have painted on the backs of patients' jackets and doctors' lab coats. Internationally recognized patient rights art advocate Regina Holliday will debut her latest works and co-lead a communal walk with Kaiser Permanente physician Ted Eytan, MD, through the Center for Total Health space.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, June 5 and 6, the Health Datapalooza will invite thought leaders to plug into the Ecosystem of Health Innovation. This event will include feature keynote addresses, a Data & Apps Expo, demonstrations of cutting-edge apps, hands-on data deep dives and thought-provoking panel discussions. Attendees can also expect ample time for networking and one-on-one interaction. This year's Health Datapalooza is hosted by The Health Data Initiative Forum, in coordination with the Institute of Medicine and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services at the National Institutes of Health.

On Thursday, June 7, NASA and Wyle are coordinating a workshop for NHHPC members and invited guests at the Kaiser Permanente Center for Total Health entitled "mHealth - Smart Media and Health: Applications Benefiting Life in Space and on Earth." The program features keynote speakers U.S. Chief Technology Officer Todd Park and Kaiser Permanente Executive Vice President/Chief Information Officer Philip Fasano, and includes an expert panel on mobile health applications for Earth and space, mHealth presentations, and six interactive breakout sessions. "As we consider the issues we need to address for providing health care in space, we find many analogous situations to the needs for health care on Earth — health care devices that are small, lightweight, and portable that can obtain and assess data and transmit data for analysis," said William H. "By identifying and solving common issues of health care in space and in remote areas on Earth, we will achieve our goal of using spaceflight innovations to benefit all humankind.
