Thousands Of Afghan Children Benefit From XANGO-AmeriCares Initiative To Address Malnourishment In The War-Torn Nation
Nine-year-old Shaima recovers from anemia and pulmonary tuberculosis with nutritional support
LEHI, Utah, Dec. 5, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Nine-year-old Shaima is one of thousands of Afghan children benefitted by a multi-year partnership between XANGO, a global wellness and direct sales leader, and AmeriCares, a global health and disaster-relief organization. Since 2007, the XANGO Meal Pack program has, in collaboration with AmeriCares and other partners, served more than 5 million meals in Afghanistan and more than a dozen other countries where extreme poverty, famine and political instability limit the opportunity for proper nourishment.

When she first arrived at Kabul's Afshar Hospital, Shaima was suffering from fever, cough and severe weight loss. Upon examining the young girl, Afshar Hospital pediatrician Dr. Muhammad Amin observed that Shaima was very pale and emaciated.
After diagnosing Shaima with anemia and pulmonary tuberculosis, Afshar Hospital provided medical treatment and nutritional support, using calorie-dense XANGO Meal Packs. Within a few weeks of beginning this regimen, Shaima's color, weight and activity level returned to normal.
"The Meal Packs have improved the nutrition and health of thousands of hospital patients and refugees in Afghanistan, and have proven to be an extremely beneficial product in our constant battle against malnutrition in and around Kabul," explained Dr. Mark Scoffield, MD, CEO of AMOR, the U.S. organization that founded Afshar Hospital.
"XANGO is grateful for the opportunity to help support child well-being through this initiative with AmeriCares, and we look forward to continued collaboration," XANGO Founder, CEO & Chairman Aaron Garrity said.
AmeriCares supports Afshar Hospital through a partnership with American Medical Overseas Relief (AMOR), a California-based non-profit, non-governmental institution.
