Thompson & Knight Law Firm Launches Dedicated Initiative to Help Companies Reduce Cyberrisks, Respond to Data Breaches
DALLAS, June 18, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The international law firm Thompson & Knight LLP has formed an interdisciplinary team of attorneys to assist clients in a broad range of data security and privacy issues. Responding to growing concerns about cybersecurity, Thompson & Knight attorneys help clients reduce risk and respond to data breaches with sophisticated services covering compliance, regulatory matters, investigations and litigation.
"Corporate attention and concerns about cybersecurity are increasing, particularly as high-profile data breaches and related litigation draw attention to the vulnerabilities that exist across virtually every industry," says Marion Bachrach, a Partner in Thompson & Knight's New York office. "While our individual team members previously have assisted clients in this area, we are responding to a growing number of requests for a single, coordinated resource that covers the complex issues of data protection and data breaches from a legal perspective."
The Thompson & Knight team includes more than 15 lawyers from the Firm's Dallas, Houston and New York offices. They provide extensive experience in commercial litigation, securities and regulatory enforcement, white-collar investigations, intellectual property, labor and employment, international transactions, and internal investigations. The group includes several former U.S. Department of Justice attorneys who have led and participated in federal investigations and cybercrime prosecutions.
Rose Romero, a Partner in Thompson & Knight's Dallas office, notes that new digital technologies, programs and services are radically changing the economic landscape, but also posing major challenges to many businesses. Those challenges include the almost-daily reports of sophisticated cyberattacks in the U.S. and elsewhere, including some that suggest nation-state involvement.
"Corporate dependence on the Internet to conduct business and interact with customers continues to grow, but so do the risks," says Romero, previously the Regional Director for the Fort Worth office of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and a former Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Texas. "A key request from our clients has been for legal oversight to help them evaluate cyberrisk protection from third-party service providers, as well as helping them develop the internal policies and training programs that can reduce the risk of breaches and protect valuable information."
As part of this effort, Thompson & Knight is sponsoring and participating in The America's Future Series Cyber Security Summit on Thursday, June 27, 2013, at the Irving (Texas) Convention Center. In addition to attorneys from Thompson & Knight and others from the private sector, the event will feature speakers from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Secret Service.
