THIS WEEK: 328 Events and Activities in Oregon to Raise Awareness About School Choice
Beaver State Parents Will Discover Education Options for Children During National School Choice Week
SALEM, Ore., Jan. 18, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Families and educators across Oregon are celebrating the unique needs and opportunities school choice provides students during School Choice Week.
The Week will feature 328 events and activities across the Beaver State, including open house events at schools, school fairs, homeschool information sessions, and other celebrations. One of the largest events in the state will be a school fair planned on Saturday, January 19, 2019 11:00 a.m. at the Salem Convention Center in Salem.
Nationwide, 40,549 events and activities are being organized to raise awareness during National School Choice Week (Jan. 20-26, 2019), and 10.8 million Americans are expected to participate. It will be the largest series of education-related events and activities in U.S. history.
In Oregon, there are many educational options, including traditional public schools, public charter schools, public magnet schools, private schools, online learning, and homeschooling.
On the local level, elected officials and community leaders are recognizing the importance of educational opportunity by officially recognizing the Week. The county of Yamhill and the cities of Baker City, Beaverton, Medford, Depoe Bay, Harrisburg, North Powder, Redmond, Tillamook, and West Linn have issued proclamations recognizing School Choice Week in their community.
Celebrated since 2011, National School Choice Week is an independent public awareness effort. The Week is nonpartisan and nonpolitical, and it is not related to any legislative advocacy campaign.
"National School Choice Week is a chance to share the viewpoint that we need to provide all Oregon students and families with the widest range of educational options so that they can find the one that works for them. Every child is different and unique, and one size education does not fit all. National School Choice Week tells that story very well and makes it personal," said Mark Siegel, executive director at Oregon Federation of Independent schools in Sheridan, Oregon.
"National School Choice Week provides an opportunity for families in Oregon and across America to evaluate their education options and research different schools in advance of the next school year," said National School Choice Week President Andrew Campanella.
