Hawkeye State Parents Will Discover Education Options for Children During National School Choice Week
Issues Proclamation Recognizing Jan. 20-26 as Iowa School Choice Week
DES MOINES, Iowa, Jan. 18, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Students, parents, teachers and community leaders will celebrate the many options available to families and great schools of all types during School Choice Week in Iowa, Jan. 20-26.
The Week will feature 291 events and activities across the Hawkeye State, including open house events at schools, school fairs, homeschool information sessions, and other celebrations. One of the largest events in the state will be a legislative breakfast on Thursday, January 24, 2019 7:00 AM at The Iowa State House in the Senate Room #116 in Des Moines.
Nationwide, 40,549 events and activities are being organized to raise awareness during National School Choice Week (Jan. 20-26, 2019), and 10.8 million Americans are expected to participate. It will be the largest series of education-related events and activities in U.S. history.
In Iowa, there are many educational options, including traditional public schools, public charter schools, public magnet schools, private schools, online learning, and homeschooling. Iowa families can take tax deductions for nonpublic school expenses. In addition, state-run scholarship opportunities are available for families under a certain income level. Any middle- or high-school student in Iowa, at the discretion of their school, can enroll in courses through Iowa Learning Online.
On the local level, elected officials and community leaders are recognizing the importance of educational opportunity by officially recognizing the Week. The counties of Dallas, Ida, Jackson, and Taylor and the cities of Blue Grass, Calamar, Carroll, Cascade, Council Bluffs, Marshalltown, Winfield, and Winterset have issued proclamations recognizing School Choice Week in their community.
Celebrated since 2011, National School Choice Week is an independent public awareness effort. The Week is nonpartisan and nonpolitical, and it is not related to any legislative advocacy campaign.
