Grand Canyon State Parents Will Discover Education Options for Children During National School Choice Week
Governor Douglas Ducey Issues Proclamation Recognizing Jan. 20-26 as Arizona School Choice Week
PHOENIX, Jan. 18, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Families and educators all across Arizona are celebrating what their schools offer and every families' opportunity to choose a school during Arizona School Choice Week, Jan 20-26.
The Week will feature 1,058 events and activities across the Grand Canyon State, including open house events at schools, school fairs, homeschool information sessions, and other celebrations. One of the largest events in the state will be a student showcase planned on Wednesday, January 23 at 10:00 a.m. at University of Arizona in Tucson. In addition, a student celebration is planned in Mesa on 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 24 at Heritage Academy Charter School.
Nationwide, 40,549 events and activities are being organized to raise awareness during National School Choice Week (Jan. 20-26, 2019), and 10.8 million Americans are expected to participate. It will be the largest series of education-related events and activities in U.S. history.
In Arizona, there are many educational options, including traditional public schools, public charter schools, public magnet schools, private schools, online learning, and homeschooling. Arizona even offers scholarships for certain families to send their children to private or parochial schools. Arizona students also have the option to attend Arizona Virtual Academy full-time at no cost.
On the local level, elected officials and community leaders are recognizing the importance of educational opportunity by officially recognizing the Week. Governor Douglas Ducey issued an official proclamation recognizing Jan. 20-26 as Arizona School Choice Week. In addition, the county of Santa Cruz and the cities of Avondale, Chandler, Dewey-Humboldt, Douglas, Flagstaff, Goodyear, Maricopa, Prescott, Prescott Valley, Scottsdale, and Yuma have issued proclamations recognizing School Choice Week in their community.
Celebrated since 2011, National School Choice Week is an independent public awareness effort. The Week is nonpartisan and nonpolitical, and it is not related to any legislative advocacy campaign.
"We celebrate because we have many positive programs in our public K-5 elementary school that we enjoy highlighting during this special week," said Julie Holdsworth, principal at Mesquite Elementary School, traditional public school serving 460 students in Casa Grande, Arizona.
"Arizona is a national leader in providing a variety of unique and interesting K-12 school choice options for children, and we encourage Arizona parents to use National School Choice Week to explore those options.," said National School Choice Week President Andrew Campanella.
