SAN ANTONIO, June 14, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Thirteen aspiring and accomplished students from San Antonio will be awarded educational scholarships during ceremonies at Educational Testing Service's local office here today. "All of these students maintained excellent grades, excelled in honors and Advanced Placement® classes, as well as volunteering, working, or both," explains George Powell, ETS Vice President and COO. "They did this while facing monumental personal and family challenges such as unemployed parents, disabled siblings, diminished parental support, and teen pregnancy. They are resilient, they succeeded and ETS employees are honored to support their plans to pursue higher education."
The ECAF fund was created in 2008 to enable company employees to make a significant investment in their communities. Each year, an advisory committee made up of ETS employees identifies a new ECAF project that gives staff the opportunity to put their time and talent toward a significant goal. The project is then funded by the generous donations received from ETS employees during the annual employee giving campaign, ETS Cares.
Scholarship winners plan to attend Texas A&M University, College Station; Texas A&M University - Kingsville; University of Houston; Smith College; Trinity University; University of Texas at Austin; and University of Texas at San Antonio. They intend to major in chemistry, behavioral science, international studies, nursing, biomedical science, biology, pre-pharmacy, electrical engineering, aerospace engineering, biochemistry, and pre-med biology.
In 2010, ETS's San Antonio staff fulfilled a "wish list" for teachers at Athens Elementary School in the city. In the past, employees donating to ECAF projects in New Jersey funded the construction of a house for Habitat for Humanity® and an Education Resource Center near their headquarters in Princeton, NJ.
The scholarship selection process was coordinated by the ETS Scholarship & Recognition Programs (SRP), which annually administers millions of dollars in new and renewable awards for companies, organizations and agencies in the United States and abroad.
