ThermoEnergy Partners With ProfiNutrients to Introduce Cost-Effective Ammonia Recovery System to European Biogas and Municipal Wastewater Treatment Market
ThermoEnergy targets the 27 EU economies that will be forced to make significant investments in their water treatment infrastructure to comply with wastewater nitrogen/ammonia treatment regulations by 2015.
WORCESTER, Mass., Oct. 4, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- ThermoEnergy Corporation (OTCBB: TMEN), a leading supplier of wastewater recovery technology and systems, announced that the ProfiNutrients BV will be marketing the company's ThermoEnergy ARP™ system in Europe. ThermoEnergy ARP is a technology for high-efficiency ammonia removal at biogas and municipal wastewater treatment plants. Based in The Netherlands, ProfiNutrients is an engineering firm specializing in the removal of nutrients and minerals from wastewater, sewage, sludge, slurry and gas.

ProfiNutrients will also be promoting the ThermoEnergy ARP system used in combination with a struvite recovery system from Multiform Harvest Inc. Multiform Harvest Inc. is a private company based in Seattle, Washington. The company has developed a patented struvite recovery technology that captures up to 80% of excess phosphorus and 20% of nitrogen from wastewater and converts it into a slow-release ammonium phosphate fertilizer. The ThermoEnergy ARP system will then remove up to 90% of the remaining ammonia/nitrogen from the centrate/filtrate side-stream and recover it as ammonium sulfate fertilizer.
"In combination, these two systems can solve the problem of nitrogen and phosphate loading into European waterways while producing two valuable fertilizers for sale that will subsidize operational costs," said Pieter Teeuwen of ProfiNutrients.
"Phosphate and nitrogen in waste water from industry, agriculture, and animal waste is a widespread and serious problem in many areas of Europe," said Matt Wilson, Business Development Director at Multiform Harvest Inc. "These nutrients contribute to the eutrophication of more than 50% of Europe's rivers and lakes, threatening their ecosystems."
"A groundbreaking European Nitrogen Assessment (ENA), conducted by 200 experts from 21 countries and 89 organizations, estimates that the annual cost of damage caused by nitrogen across Europe is euro 70 to 320 billion ($100-460 billion)," said Cary Bullock, President and CEO of ThermoEnergy Corporation. "Additionally, a Frost and Sullivan study estimates the annual market for wastewater treatment equipment for nitrogen removal in Europe alone, is in the multibillion dollar range."
"ThermoEnergy's ARP process uses physical rather than biological chemistries to recover and convert ammonia into salable fertilizers," said Bullock, "In addition to being extremely cost competitive, the ARP process is easy to maintain, has a very small footprint, and can handle varying conditions much more readily than biological systems for ammonia recovery."
