WORCESTER, Mass., Sept. 29, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- "Clean coal can provide a greener, more cost efficient strategy than gas to bridge the transition between fossil fuels and renewables for baseline power production," said Bob Marrs, Vice President of International Business Development for ThermoEnergy Corporation (OTCBB: TMEN), in his presentation to the 2011 Clean Coal China Congress in Beijing on September 26. "Natural gas fired power generation reduces, but does not eliminate, CO2 emissions; nor does it eliminate SOx and NOx emissions," said Marrs. "Pressurized oxycombustion of coal has the potential to virtually eliminate all power plant air emissions at a cost that is more competitive than new gas-fired generation," said Marrs.

ThermoEnergy Corporation, is the developer of ZEBS®, a pressurized oxy-combustion technology in which the power plant boiler flue gas system, including the furnace, is operated at elevated pressure and oxygen concentration levels. Operating a power plant firing system at high pressure allows the full, higher-heating value of coal to be utilized, recovering the latent heat of vaporization and enables the CO2 in the flue gas to be captured in a supercritical state available for Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) or other Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS) opportunities. Other harmful chemical vapors such as NOx, SOx , mercury, and particulates are also captured and do not enter the atmosphere.
Additionally, the ZEBS cycle allows for utilization of lower grade fuel sources, and captures the entire moisture content, making the inherent process environmentally friendly and cost effective.
"A ZEBS® power block can easily be added to an existing coal-fired power plant at a fraction of the cost of building an entirely new power plant using conventional technology, and can extend the life cycle of that plant by as much as 30 or more years," said Marrs. "This would be delivered by integrating a new ZEBS power block with the existing Steam Generation Cycle and associated equipment."
"When you add a ZEBS power block to an existing plant, you also avoid the citing, permitting and infrastructure complications associated with building a power plant in a new location," Marrs explained. "While natural gas will continue to face price volatility, the U.S. and China have large reserves of easily accessible coal and the infrastructure available to transport it, while natural gas will continue to face price volatility and an uncertain future regarding the economic viability of tapping into unconventional reserves through hydrofracking."
