Theresa's Research Foundation Hosts 4th Annual Metastatic Breast Cancer Conference
October 13 Declared Metastatic Breast Cancer Day In Texas
HOUSTON, Oct. 11, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Theresa's Research Foundation, The Baylor College of Medicine and The Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center will co-host the Metastatic Breast Cancer Conference, Oct. 12-13 at the MD Anderson Mitchell Basic Sciences Research Building in Houston, Texas. The event is the only annual medical conference focused exclusively on metastatic breast cancer.
The Metastatic Breast Cancer Conference will bring together a diverse audience to create a collaborative environment to accelerate research with a long-term goal of developing curative approaches for metastatic breast cancer patients. The conference will include lectures, clinical debates, an advocate forum, panel discussions, and a poster session with featured speakers from the country's leading universities, medical schools and research institutions.
"By gathering world-class experts from different disciplines, we hope to foster collaborative efforts to conquer breast cancer metastasis, a group of devastating diseases, that take more than 500,000 lives per year," said Conference Co-Director Dr. Xiang Zhang, associate professor of molecular and cellular biology in the Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center, part of the Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center, at Baylor College of Medicine.
The conference takes on a special meaning this year, as the State of Texas observes Metastatic Breast Cancer Day on Oct. 13.
Theresa's Research Foundation noted the role State Senator Donna Campbell played in passing this resolution, as well as the Legislature's continued support of cancer research through agencies like the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT).
"As a mother, a doctor and a state legislator, efforts to raise awareness and fund research to find a cure for a disease that takes the lives of far too many women, some 500,000 deaths annually, is critical. Metastatic Breast Cancer Day and the Metastatic Breast Cancer Conference are driving awareness, engagement and collaboration on an important public health concern," said Dr. Campbell, who carried the state observance resolution during the 85th Texas Legislature.
