Here are highlights from Monday's Analyst Blog:
Boeing Provides 1Q Deliveries
The Boeing Company (NYSE:BA) announced its deliveries across its commercial and defense operations for the first quarter of 2013. The company maintained its quarter delivery level on an annualized basis with deliveries of 137 airplanes.
The 737 model continues to be the pillar of Boeing's strength in the commercial airplane sector with deliveries of 102 airplanes, followed by its 777 model with 24 deliveries. Both these models continue to perform better than competing models owing to their fuel efficiency and lower operating costs. In the year-earlier period, the company delivered 99 units of the 737 and 20 units of the 777 model.
Boeing's deliveries in the defense and space business were 45 in the first quarter of 2013. Of this 15 were Apache helicopters, 12 were F/A-18E/F and EA-18G fighter jets and 9 were Chinook helicopters.
Moreover, Boeing won net orders for 209 planes in the Mar 2013 quarter, after considering the cancellations of 11 jets.
Boeing has a unique position as the largest aircraft manufacturer in the world in terms of revenues, orders and deliveries. Besides, it is one of the largest aerospace and defense contractors in the world. Also, its revenues are spread across more than 90 countries around the globe.
In the fourth quarter of 2012, Boeing delivered better-than-expected results based on higher deliveries of commercial airplanes. The company's strong numbers came from higher commercial plane deliveries which more than offset a tepid quarter for defense.
Boeing's presence in the commercial airplanes market insulates the company from U.S. defense budget shock waves that are currently affecting all defense players across the board. Boeing had a strong commercial airplanes backlog. At the end of 2012, the company's backlog was more than 4,400 airplanes valued at a record $319 billion.
Boeing currently retains a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).
BlackBerry to End BBM Music Service
In a recent strategic move BlackBerry smartphone developer, Research In Motion Ltd. *(Nasdaq:BBRY) has announced that it will discontinue its BBM music service from Jun 2, 2013. It is believed that tough competition from free online music-streaming service providers has compelled BBRY to shut down its operations.
Notably, the cloud-based music-sharing service allows BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) subscribers to create a music library and share songs with friends at a monthly service pack of $4.99. However, a user can share a maximum of 50 songs from a list of more than 1 million tracks.
BBRY is compensating its 60 million BBM subscribers by providing them with a 30 day free access to RDIO music service. RDIO offers more than 18 million songs, including the latest hits and classic albums.
Streaming music on mobile phones has been flourishing over the past few years as companies like Pandora Media Inc. (NYSE:P), Spotify and MOG continue to fight for market share. In Canada, BBRY subscribers are also deprived of CBS Music's free on demand music service, which is available in rival Apple Inc.'s (Nasdaq:AAPL) iPhone and Google Inc.'s (Nasdaq:GOOG) Android-based smartphones.
We believe that BBRY needs to come up with a similar free music-streaming service for the old BlackBerry smartphone customers to cope up with its rivals in the online music category.
However, BBRY has not included the music service in its latest BB10-operating system (OS)-based smartphones. Instead, the new OS-based smartphones come with a free music-streaming service called Songza that recommends playlist based on the mood or activity of the user.
Research In Motion currently carries a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).
*Research In Motion announced that effective Jan 30, 2013, the company would operate around the world under the name BlackBerry. From Feb 4, 2013, the company's ticker symbol for trading has been changed from "RIMM" to "BBRY" on NASDAQ. The legal name of the company has not changed, for which the approval of the official change by shareholders will be sought at the company's Annual General Meeting later in 2013. During the time, the company will do business as BlackBerry.
