LOS ANGELES, April 21, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Nurses are paid the best in Santa Cruz, Calif. ($136,000) while physicians are paid worst in Winston-Salem, N.C. ($54,000), according to a new GOBankingRates study that found the highest- and lowest-paying cities for the 20 hottest jobs in America.
The report, which shows the huge impact geography has on American salaries, analyzed employment and median salary numbers adjusted for local wage differentials, revealing the five worst- and five best-paying cities for each of the 20 hottest jobs today, from accountant to web developer.

"Many people believe the career you choose is the ultimate arbiter of what salary you're going to make," said Casey Bond, GOBankingRates' managing editor. "But our study found the city you live in has just as much — if not more — sway over your income. For example, dental hygienists in San Francisco make double what dentists in Pittsburgh, Pa., make. That's why Americans who are considering taking out hefty student loans for their desired career path should start looking at where they're going to be settling down sooner, rather than later."

Methodology: GOBankingRates gathered data for each of the top 20 jobs named in U.S. News' "100 Best Jobs of 2015" report, using the Bureau of Labor Statistics' March 2015 Occupational Employment Statistics (OES) to find median wage, total employment figures and other supplemental descriptive statistics, broken down by state and city. Only cities with 500 or more employees in the given occupation were considered in the study. Two wage differential metrics were applied to weight local income differences: One compared each occupation's local median salary to the median salaries of all jobs in the area, the other compared each occupation's local median salary to its national median salary (with the first metric weighted twice as heavily as the second).
