The World's Best Lacrosse Players Go for Gold This Summer in Denver
The Federation of International Lacrosse World Championship Takes Place July 10-19 in The Mile High City
DENVER, July 10, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Don't miss "the fastest sport on two feet" (according to The New York Times) in Denver from July 10-19, 2014, showcasing the world's greatest lacrosse players.
The Federation of International Lacrosse World Championships brings the top men's lacrosse players from across the world to the 18,000-seat Dick's Sporting Goods Park for an action packed series of matches. The United States will defend its crown, having emerged victorious during the 2010 championship in Manchester, England.
A record 38 nations will participate in this year's world championship, playing 142 games over 10 days, beginning with a rematch of the last world championship game. The event opens on Thursday, July 10 with the opening ceremony at 5 p.m., followed by the host United States team battling Canada. The U.S. beat Canada, 12-10, in the 2010 world championship. The championship match takes place on July 19 at 7 p.m., with a closing ceremony following at 9:30 p.m.
Individual game tickets for the 2014 Federation of International Lacrosse Men's World Championships are now on sale, with full event ticket packages also available. Lacrosse in Denver
Lacrosse is gaining a fervent following in Colorado, growing 86 percent between 2006 and 2013.
The Colorado Mammoth is part of the burgeoning National Lacrosse League (NLL) and plays home games at the Pepsi Center, often attracting crowds rivaling those of the Denver Nuggets and Colorado Avalanche. For the sixth time in the team's 12-year history in Colorado, the Mammoth led the NLL in attendance in 2014 with 15,706 fans per game. Since relocating to Denver, the franchise has averaged more than 16,000 fans per game, and has been top-two in league attendance in every season. The season runs from December to April.
More Major League Lacrosse (MLL) thrills can be found at Sports Authority Field at Mile High, where the Denver Outlaws take on all comers May through August. The team is young, hungry, and provides a great introduction to this exciting sport. In 2013, the Denver Outlaws led their league in attendance for the seventh year in a row and set the MLL single game attendance record of 31,019 on July 4, 2013 when the Outlaws played the NY Lizards.
The University of Denver (DU) Pioneers men's lacrosse team is one of the top-ranked college teams in the nation, advancing to the NCAA Final Four in Baltimore in 2014. This was the third time in four years that the Pioneers have advanced to the Final Four.
In 2015, the NCAA is bringing one of the NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship Quarterfinals to Sports Authority Field at Mile High, hosted by DU Pioneers and Denver Sports.
