The Women Of The Harlem Globetrotters Become Hometown Girl Scouts
Globetrotters stars TNT Maddox, T-Time Brawner and Mighty Mitchell give back by empowering young women
PHOENIX, Feb. 7, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- In honor of the first annual National Girl Scout Cookie Day on Feb. 8, Harlem Globetrotters female stars Fatima "TNT" Maddox, Tammy "T-Time" Brawner and Ariel "Mighty" Mitchell have joined forces with their local hometown Girl Scout councils and registered as Adult Girl Scouts of the U.S. TNT has registered with Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania, Mighty with Girl Scouts of Louisiana East and T-Time with Girl Scouts of Northern California.
The Harlem Globetrotters have been supporters of Girl Scouts for years, hosting meet and greets and sponsoring special Girl Scout programs at their live events. More importantly, the Harlem Globetrotters and Girl Scouts have a shared commitment in many of the same initiatives, including anti-bullying and giving back to the community.
"Joining Girl Scouts is very exciting for me and my female teammates," said TNT, who in 2011 was signed as the Globetrotters' first female player in nearly two decades. "Girl Scouts inspire young ladies to achieve great things, and that's what T-Time, Mighty and I aspire to do as members of the Globetrotters, who are known worldwide as the 'Ambassadors of Goodwill.' "
"Girl Scouts of Northern California is thrilled to have Harlem Globetrotter Tammy 'T-Time' Brawner joining our team of amazing adult Girl Scout members!" said Marina Park, CEO, Girl Scouts of Northern California. "Having a successful role model like T-Time – an Oakland native who is not only an amazing athlete but also holds her MBA in global business management – is so inspiring for our girls."
The Harlem Globetrotters and Girl Scouts share a commitment to anti-bullying programs, such as Girl Scouts' Be a Friend First (BFF) initiative and the Globetrotters' new community outreach program, "The ABCs of Bullying Prevention." Both organizations are working together to give youth the tools to feel safe at school, online, and everywhere in between by teaching children to recognize bullying, tell an adult, be brave, boost confidence, be a better friend, and have better friends.
The Harlem Globetrotters are currently on their 2013 "You Write the Rules" World Tour and will continue to work with local Girl Scout Councils across America. Girl Scouts can receive discounted tickets, Scout patches that feature a female player for the first time (TNT), as well as troop meet and greets and cookie presentation at games, among other fun things.
Sponsored by Howard Johnson Hotels, Wonderful Pistachios, Greyhound Lines, Spalding, and Russell Athletic, the Original Harlem Globetrotters are celebrating their 87th consecutive year, continuing a world famous tradition of ball handling wizardry, basketball artistry, and one-of-a-kind family entertainment that continues to thrill fans of all ages. Throughout their history, the Globetrotters have showcased their iconic talents in 121 countries and territories on six continents, often breaking down cultural and societal barriers while providing fans with their first-ever basketball experience. Proud inductees of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, the Globetrotters have entertained hundreds of millions of fans—among them popes, kings, queens, and presidents—over more than eight thrilling decades.
