The Witty and Glittery 'Beautiful People' Returns To Logo This June
Award-Winning BBC Original Comedy Series "Beautiful People" Returns with U.S. Premiere of Second Season on Saturday, June 12 at 10/9c on Logo
Returning Series Based on the Best-selling Novel "Beautiful People" By New York Observer Columnist and Barneys Creative Director Simon Doonan
NEW YORK, May 5 /PRNewswire/ -- It's the summer of "the underdog" as the BBC hit comedy series "Beautiful People" premieres its second season Saturday, June 12 at 10/9c on Logo. The six episode, half-hour comedy series, based on the memoirs of style guru Simon Doonan's childhood, shows that the path to fabulous never did run smooth, especially if you have one very quirky and dysfunctional family. "Beautiful People" premieres Saturday, June 12 at 10/9c.
From the producer of "Absolutely Fabulous," "Beautiful People" offers a coming-of-age story through the glitzy, starry-eyed viewpoint of a young Simon Doonan as he and his best friend Kyle (or self-described as "Kylie") encounter misadventures in their suburban, working class town of Reading, England. Simon's youthful memories range from the surreal with musical numbers interjecting his youthful recounts to the glamorous with guest star appearances by Dannii Minogue and Broadway star Elaine Paige.
This season picks up after an adult Simon returns to his hometown in Reading after the break-up with his boyfriend in New York City. Simon immediately finds comfort from his supportive and loving, yet dysfunctional family including his peroxide whirlwind of a mother, Debbie, his quirky winemaker father, Andy, his now-pregnant sassy sister, Ashlene, and his blind, foul-mouthed "Aunt" Hayley. The return to his hometown immediately floods Simon with memories of his teenage years in the late 1990's -- the age of the boy band and "girl power."
Simon's memories recount his early teenage years as he and his best friend, Kylie, attempt to overcome the struggles of adolescence through rose-colored glasses and diva-sized personalities. As young Simon's search for the "beautiful people" continues, the Doonans receive a visit from the Virgin Mary, Kylie's absent father returns to Reading and Simon reveals his secret crush. Inspired by the memories of window-dresser and writer Simon Doonan, "Beautiful People" exuberates humor and dazzling energy as one boy learns that living amongst the "beautiful people" is a dream more attainable than we think.
The memorable cast returns including Olivia Colman ("That Mitchell and Webb Look"), Meera Syal, Aidan McArdle ("Goodness Gracious Me," "The Kumars at No. 42"), and Samuel Barnett ("The History Boys"). It also brings together youngsters Luke Ward-Wilkinson ("Wild at Heart") and Layton Williams ("Billy Elliot" in the West End), who steal the screen as the teenage Simon and his best friend Kyle (a.k.a. "Kylie").
In anticipation of the second season, be sure to catch up and watch Simon's search for the "beautiful people" from the very beginning. Go to www.logotv.com now to watch the entire first season (six episodes, half-hour format).
In association with Logo, "Beautiful People" is written by Jonathan Harvey ("Gimme Gimme Gimme," "Beautiful Thing") and based on the best-selling, wild childhood memoirs of Simon Doonan, Creative Director of Barneys, New York. The series executive producer is Jon Plowman (Absolutely Fabulous, The Office) and it is produced by Justin Davies.
The best-selling novel Beautiful People: My Family and Other Glamorous Varmints and 'Eccentric Glamour: Creating an Insanely More Fabulous You are available in trade paperback (Simon & Schuster Trade Paperback).
