The West Clinic Announces Formation of Comprehensive Breast Center in Partnership with Leading Breast Surgeons
MEMPHIS, Tenn., Sept. 30, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The West Clinic, the Mid-South's premier cancer practice, is pleased to announce the formation of The West Clinic Comprehensive Breast Center, a multidisciplinary breast center, which will be the first center of its kind in the region. The newly formed Comprehensive Breast Center at The West Clinic will partner with The Breast Clinic of Memphis and its breast surgical oncologist, Michael P. Berry, M.D., FACS. The newly formed partnership will add a vital component to The West Clinic's multi-disciplinary team of medical oncology and radiology. The Comprehensive Breast Center will provide patients the full spectrum of care from screening to diagnosis to the development of individualized care plans including surgery and follow-up. The Center will add two additional leading breast surgeons from the area: Roy M. Oswaks, M.D., and Russell H. Patterson, III, M.D., FACS to its staff, creating a breast surgical team unmatched in the region.
The West Clinic Comprehensive Breast Center will integrate breast imaging and surgery into its multi-disciplinary, patient-centric cancer care model. The Breast Center will provide complete breast care with state-of-the-art digital screening and diagnostic mammography, sonography, percutaneous biopsy, genetic counseling, surgical therapy, chemotherapy and clinical research. Patients will have access to both national and local clinical trials.

Approximately one in eight women in the United States (12%) will develop invasive breast cancer. In 2010, an estimated 207,090 new cases of invasive breast cancer were expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S. along with 54,010 new cases of non-invasive (in situ) breast cancer.
Breast Surgery Team
Michael P. Berry, M.D., FACS - Founder and Director, The Breast Clinic of Memphis
Dr. Michael Berry is a nationally respected Breast Surgical Oncologist who founded The Breast Clinic of Memphis nearly a decade ago. He was the first fellowship trained Breast Surgical Oncologist in the Mid-South and Director of The Breast Clinic of Memphis. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Surgery and received his Fellowship of Breast Surgical Oncology through the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Fellowship of Breast Surgical Oncology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. He received his surgical training at Texas A&M University, medical degree from the University of Arkansas, and undergraduate degree from Baylor University.
Dr. Berry is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the Society of Surgical Oncology. He is a member of the American College of Surgery Oncology Group, member and committee member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons, and member of the American Society of Breast Diseases. He has served as a board member of the Mid-South Division of the American Cancer Society and as president and vice president of the Memphis Area Board of the American Cancer Society. He has also served on the cancer committees of both the Methodist and Baptist Hospitals in Memphis.
As a national consultant, speaker and advisor, Dr. Berry is on the faculty of many programs offered through the American College of Surgeons, The American Society of Breast Surgeons and Moffitt Cancer Center.
Roy M. Oswaks, M.D. – The Breast Clinic of Memphis
Dr. Roy Oswaks completed medical school and surgical training in Buffalo, New York. He went on to serve two years as a surgeon in the U. S. Army and two additional years at the United States Public Health Service Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia. Dr. Oswaks entered private practice in Virginia Beach and was later appointed Chief of Surgery at Sentara Bayside Hospital. After relocating to the Memphis area in 2002, he began specializing exclusively in breast surgery and treatment. Dr. Oswaks is with The Breast Clinic of Memphis and currently serves as Chief of General Surgery at St. Francis Hospital, while also serving as a Cancer Commission Liaison. He is a member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons and also the American Society of Breast Diseases. Dr. Oswaks has been approved by the FDA as a MQSA Mammography Interpreting Physician. He is committed to providing the highest level of breast care to the patients in the greater Memphis area.
Russell H. Patterson, III, M.D., FACS
Dr. Russell Patterson, III is one of the Mid-South's leading breast surgeons. Dr. Patterson received his medical degree from the University of Tennessee, Memphis after graduating from Vanderbilt University. Upon completion of his post-graduate surgical training, he began practicing with his father, Dr. Russell Patterson, Jr. After more than 25 years of practicing general surgery, Dr. Patterson focused his specialty to the treatment and surgery of diseases of the breast.
He has been at the forefront of bringing new surgical techniques in treating this disease to the Mid-South region. He was one of the first Memphis surgeons to embrace the Lumpectomy procedure when appropriate as an option to mastectomy and the first to offer the Sentinel Node Biopsy as an alternative to the complete lymph node dissection.
Dr. Patterson has been instrumental in the development of the Baptist Hospital Comprehensive Breast Center and serves on its Executive Board. He also serves on the Leadership Council for the Baptist Hospital for Women.
