The Welch Foundation Announces Nearly $25 Million in Texas Research Grant Funding
2017 class encompasses 106 grants across 14 Texas colleges and universities
HOUSTON, June 1, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- The Welch Foundation, one of the nation's largest sources of private funding for basic research, has announced its 2017 research grant funding, which totals nearly $25 million. The funds will be allocated over the next three years, with annual payouts of $8,315,000, all within the state of Texas.
"Basic chemical research is investigative at its core and the building block of applied research," said Charles W. Tate, Chair and Director of The Welch Foundation Board of Directors. "Funding from The Welch Foundation has proven invaluable to the propulsion of research at Texas educational institutions and we look forward to the contributions of this year's grant recipients."
Since its inception in 1954, The Welch Foundation has contributed more than $819 million to the advancement of chemistry through research grants, departmental programs, endowed chairs and other special projects at educational institutions in Texas.
A breakdown of 2017 research grant funding across the state:
Houston Area Universities
- Received funding for 32 grants, totaling $7,545,000
- Grants awarded to Rice University, Texas A&M University, University of Houston and Baylor College of Medicine
Dallas/Fort Worth Area Universities
- Received funding for 42 grants, totaling $9,720,000
- Grants awarded to The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, The University of Texas at Dallas, University of North Texas, Baylor University and The University of Texas at Arlington
Austin Area Universities
- Received funding for 26 grants, totaling $6,375,000
- Grants awarded to The University of Texas at Austin
San Antonio Area Universities
- Received funding for 4 grants, totaling $915,000
- Grants awarded to The University of Texas at San Antonio and The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio
West Texas Area Universities
- Received funding for 1 grant, totaling $195,000
- Grant awarded to The University of Texas at El Paso
South Texas Area Universities
- Received funding for 1 grant, totaling $195,000
- Grant awarded to The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley
Two other notable key initiatives of The Welch Foundation are the Robert A. Welch Award in Chemistry and the Norman Hackerman Award in Chemical Research. The Welch Award recognizes individuals who have made important chemical research contributions which have a significant, positive influence on mankind. The recipient receives a gold medallion and $500,000. The Hackerman Award recognizes the accomplishments of chemical scientists in Texas who are early in their careers. The current monetary amount of the award is $150,000.
