RADNOR, Pa., Dec. 23, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The VWR Foundation, a charitable organization dedicated to giving back to the science community, is excited to announce the distribution of two Legacy Grants to the U.S. Naval Academy Foundation and Quench and Connect. Both the U.S. Naval Academy Foundation and Quench and Connect have been Founder Grant recipients since 2013. The Legacy Grants provided an opportunity to further support the three pillars of the VWR Foundation mission - science education, health and well-being and research.
Quench and Connect was awarded $20,000 in support of its Uganda Science Education Project. This grant provides all the teaching tools and reagents for the chemistry and physics curriculum at St. Dominic's School in Masindi, Uganda. Quench and Connect, along with the VWR Foundation's support, empowers schools to teach science by providing clean water and educational tools for success.
The VWR Foundation awarded a $50,000 grant to the U.S. Naval Academy Foundation in Annapolis, MD to support its Girls-Only STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) programs. These programs are offered throughout the year for middle-school age girls to participate in a variety of hands-on STEM activities. Led by female U.S. Naval Academy faculty and midshipmen, the goal of this program is to spark interest in female students to continue STEM educations well-past middle and high school.
Natalie H. Brianas, Assistant Director of Corporate & Foundation Relations at the Naval Academy Foundation, commented, "Our corporate and foundation supporters understand just how vital it is to increase the number of young women studying and pursuing careers in the STEM disciplines. The STEM Center's outreach programs to schools, educators and students across the country play an important role in increasing interest in the sciences as well as in the opportunities available with a Naval Academy education."
Deborah Kauffman, VWR Foundation Director was fortunate enough to visit the U.S. Naval Academy this year and added, "In an ever increasingly technical world, the staff and cadets of the Naval Academy are dedicated to STEM education. Their enthusiasm and passion for their subject matter is infectious, whether they are working to help train other educators or generating excitement through hands-on experiments with students from all areas of the country."
The VWR Foundation began distributing Legacy Grants in 2012 to honor its 50th grant distributed. The Legacy Grant program was created to actively engage with non-profits on larger science programs that exceed the Foundation's $10,000 Founders Grant limit.
