The Vrdolyak Law Group Supports a Youth Basketball Tournament Against Gun Violence

CHICAGO, Nov. 2, 2017 /PRNewswire/ --The Vrdolyak Law Group is sponsoring the third annual LaVell Southern Holiday Peace Tournament, a youth basketball competition with the goal of fighting gun violence. The event takes place on Jan 13, 2018 at Mount Carmel High School in Chicago.

The tournament is named in memory of LaVell Southern who was a talented athlete in high school. Sadly, at age 23 he was shot and killed while simply standing on Randolph Street in Chicago's West Loop.

LaVell's murder shocked and saddened his former teammates and friends. One of them, Richard Russell, turned his grief into action by starting a non-profit against gun violence. The Russell & Clarke Youth Foundation, established in 2016, organizes competitive sports for young athletes.

"I started the youth basketball tournament because I wanted people from different communities to come together. When you play sports, you get a chance to work with others, to understand one another, to rely on them. You learn to solve problems together," said Richard Russell.

Richard Russell is an employee at the Vrdolyak Law Group. When the law firm learned of his efforts to fight gun violence, it joined in the cause.

The tournament consists of eight teams of ten players each, and is open to all high-school freshmen and young adults. One of the participants will receive a $1,000 scholarship.

This will be the third year that The Vrdolyak Law Group sponsors the tournament. Every year the law firm provides jerseys for all 80 team members in the tournament.

"We always try to help the youth. Getting them involved in competitive sports is one way we can do that," added Edward J. Vrdolyak.
