The Votes Are in! Grindr Wins 2012 About.com Readers' Choice Awards for Best Dating App
Grindr Becomes First-Ever Exclusively Gay Network to Win
LOS ANGELES, April 3, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Grindr, the premier all-male geo-social network app, announced today that About.com's readers named Grindr the Best Dating App for the 2012 About.com Readers' Choice Awards. The About.com Readers' Choice Awards showcase the best in hundreds of categories across most of About.com's channels, from technology to dating.
Grindr was a clear favorite among About.com readers for Best Dating App, with 74 percent choosing Grindr over Are You Interested, Skout, Tagged, Tingle and Zoosk. In 2011, About.com added the Best Dating App category, and out of all the nominees, Grindr is the only exclusively gay app to be nominated – not to mention the first gay app to win the coveted title of Best Dating App.
"To be recognized as the Best Dating App by the Web's largest network is an incredible honor, and I want to thank our 3.5 million users from all over the world who continue to be our strongest advocates for spreading the word about our app and voting," said Joel Simkhai, Founder and CEO of Grindr. "To be chosen as Best Dating App among all the mainstream dating apps out there is a tremendous step forward for our community; such recognition would not have been possible just a few years ago. Just three years ago, location-based apps did not exist, and we've now pioneered an entire category of geo-social apps with Grindr being the global phenomenon that it is today."
Grindr's win over such highly recognized applications for the award showcases its impact in a world where dating and location-based mobile applications are constantly evolving. Grindr was also recently awarded 2012's iDate Awards for Best Mobile Dating App and Best New Technology. The app was also named the winner of TechCrunch's 2011 Crunchies Award for Best Location Application.
Up to 71,000 users are logged onto Grindr at any given moment, and 908,000 users log in on a daily basis. Grindr counts nearly 10,000 new users who log in approximately eight times per day and spend an average of 1.5 hours each day using the app. For more information about Grindr, please visit Grindr.com.
