The Village of Hodgkins Upgrading Video Surveillance network with Siklu Multi-Gigabit EtherHaul™ Series Radios
Age, increased capacity demands and 5GHz rising interference levels drive the Village to a Siklu Solution
FORT LEE, N.J., Oct. 30, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Siklu Inc., the global market leader in mmWave wireless solutions is being deployed to replace an existing 5GHz mesh network supporting video surveillance in the downtown area of the Village of Hodgkins, Illinois.
The original wireless network supporting 45 cameras used for video surveillance and crime prevention is being replaced by higher capacity, interference free Siklu mmWave products. Using the Axis Q1765LE series cameras for license plate recognition and Q3709 series cameras for general overview per intersection and Milestone XProtect® Professional as the Video Management platform, the system was first deployed with Firetide 5GHz mesh products. As elements of the wireless network ran into issues, Siklu Etherhaul™ products were used as replacements.
The decision to move to mmWave in general, and Siklu in particular, was based on the need for higher capacities while at the same time ensuring performance. All of this with a backdrop of rapid increase in congestion in the 5GHz band. When the network was first deployed the average camera consumed 3 to 5Mbps. Today some cameras running 4K can drive 30 to 50Mbps of connectivity performance over a given mmWave link. In addition, with over 24GHz of available spectrum in the 60,70-80GHz frequency bands, and the capacity to support from 100Mbps up to multiple Gbps, both the increased capacity needs and the interference issues were resolved.
"We have never had a second thought about our decision to move forward with Siklu as a supplier for the replacement network." Said Jesse Visocnik from Secure Integration. "We needed a broad selection of products with a selection of throughput and size, and Siklu was able to support that. We use Etherhaul™ 500s, 600s, 1200FX and 2200s in this network, giving us up to 2Gbps bandwidth on our core backhaul links."
Likewise, the robust construction, high availability and MTBF coupled with an excellent $/Gbps offering were important to the Village in confirming the Siklu choice. "As a crime suppression and crime prevention tool, it is imperative that our video network be as close to 100% up time as possible. We require a system that will last for years with minimal maintenance and this network meets those needs", quoted Chief of Police Ernest Millsap.
Secure Integration worked with Anixter for the supply of the radios, one of Siklu's strategic distributors servicing the security market.
The Village of Hodgkins is a prime example of the increased demands placed on wireless networks in 2018 and going forward. Higher capacities and interference free operation were the drivers for Secure Integration and the Village of Hodgkins itself choosing Siklu. A decision being made by more and more smart cities as capacities facing similar challenges.
