The Unknown Travel Insurance Benefit for the Valentine's Day Blizzard, Revealed by Squaremouth
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Feb. 13, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- As New England prepares for another blizzard, city officials are bracing for a new threat: roofs collapsing under the weight of record snowfall. Travelers who are already away may not be able to protect their houses, but those with a travel insurance policy may have help getting home. Squaremouth, America's fastest growing travel insurance comparison site, explains how travel insurance can bring home travelers whose homes are damaged by the blizzard.
The Unknown Benefit for Travelers Whose Homes are Damaged by the Blizzard
Massachusetts governor, Charlie Baker, expressed the growing concern, saying, "We are starting to worry about roofs which are under tremendous stress from the last few days."
While many people believe travel insurance can only be applied to a situation that occurs in a foreign destination, most policies extend coverage to specific situations that occur back home. Extreme damage to a traveler's home is one of those situations.
"Almost every Trip Cancellation policy on our website includes coverage for travelers whose residence becomes uninhabitable by a natural disaster," explains Squaremouth co-founder and CEO, Chris Harvey.
Travelers whose homes become uninhabitable, may be eligible to file a claim under the Trip Interruption benefit to end their trip early and return home. Trip Interruption covers up to 150% of the cost of the trip. Under this benefit, travelers may be reimbursed for their unused trip expenses, as well as last minute airfare to return home.
Unfortunately for travelers who haven't purchased a policy, it is too late to get coverage for any losses related to the storm. In order to be eligible for this benefit, travelers must have purchased a policy before the "Valentine's Day" blizzard, Winter Storm Neptune, was named.
