"Quiet Spaces: Picturing Sanctuary in the Illustrated Book" Exhibition (free and open to the public 12-6 p.m. daily)
Sanctuary, a place of refuge, can be found not only in a physical place of shelter, but also in the vastness of nature, in the comfort of home and community, and in our imaginations, dreams, and memories. These spheres of safety are reflected in prints and photographs in the modern illustrated books exhibited in Quiet Spaces: Picturing Sanctuary in the Illustrated Book. Featuring more than 40 volumes from the permanent collection of the University of San Francisco's Donohue Rare Book Room, Quiet Spaces encourages the exploration of diverse personal and collective experiences and perceptions of the theme of sanctuary.
Among the featured volumes are Ansel Adams's Parmelian Prints of the High Sierras (1927), The Collected Sonnets by John Keats illustrated by John Buckland Wright (1930), Joyce Lancaster Wilson's The Ark of Noah (1975), Kenneth Rexroth's Between Two Wars: Selected Poems Written Prior to World War II illustrated by Daniel Goldstein (1982), and L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz illustrated by Barry Moser (1985). An interactive iteration of a recent print project related to the theme of sanctuary by San Francisco artists Sergio de la Torre and Chris Treggiari entitled Sanctuary City/Ciudad Santuario will also be included in the exhibition.
This exhibition is a curatorial collaboration by the University of San Francisco's graduate Museum Studies Curatorial Practicum class, with the support of USF's Donohue Rare Book Room, Mary and Carter Thacher Gallery, and the M.A. in Museum Studies Program.
