WASHINGTON, Feb. 5, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Today the Tax Council Policy Institute (TCPI) announced Mark A. Weinberger, EY Global Chairman and CEO, and former U.S. Treasury Assistant Secretary for Tax Policy, will be recognized with its Pillar of Excellence Award for his extraordinary accomplishments in the field of business and tax policy. The award will be presented at TCPI's 16th Annual Tax Policy & Practice Symposium on February 12 in Washington, D.C.
"With an eminent career and track record of leadership in global tax policy on all platforms both inside EY and out, Mark is the perfect business leader for this year's Pillar Award," said Doug Bates, Chair of TCPI's Board of Directors and Vice President of Federal Relations at Northwestern Mutual. "His forward-thinking approach will continue to create positive change in the business and tax community."
Weinberger will be only the sixth recipient of this award, which honors individuals in the tax community who consistently go above and beyond what is required to fulfill their professional obligations, proving to be true leaders in their field. TCPI searches for an outstanding tax professional whose performance and activities help further the knowledge and understanding of the tax community at large. Criteria for the Pillar of Excellence Award include: playing a key role in developing tax policy, recognizing its impact on business and the economy; and, improving the overall understanding of foreign and domestic tax policies among tax professionals, executives and policymakers.
"Mark has a wealth of both high level technical tax policy expertise within government and an impressive array of private business sector experience." said Lyn Walker, TCPI's Executive Director. He is highly thought of across the board in the tax policy community not only because of his achievements and commitment to the policy process, but for his ability to work effectively with people of varying and often conflicting views to advance issues. TCPI is pleased to recognize him for his outstanding work and integrity."
Weinberger assumed his current role in July 2013. In addition to his role at Treasury, Weinberger has also had an extensive career in public service and as an entrepreneur. He was appointed by President Clinton to serve on the U.S. Social Security Administration Advisory Board, and held other US government positions including Chief of Staff of President Clinton's 1994 Bipartisan Commission on Entitlement and Tax Reform; Chief Tax and Budget Counsel to US Senator John Danforth (R-Missouri); advisor to the National Commission on Economic Growth and Tax Reform; and Commissioner on the National Commission on Retirement Policy. Weinberger also co-founded Washington Counsel, P.C., a Washington DC-based law and legislative advisory firm that merged into Ernst & Young LLP and now operates as Washington Council EY.
He holds a B.A. from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia (1983), an M.B.A. and J.D. from Case Western University in Cleveland, Ohio (1987), and an LL.M from Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C (1991).
TCPI's 16th Annual Tax Policy & Practice Symposium, "How Taxes Matter: The Globalization of Tax Policy and Implications for US Economic Growth and Investment," will convene to explore the globalization of tax policy and its implications on the economic growth of the United States and companies investment decisions.
