FORT GIBSON, Okla., Sept. 24, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Each year, somewhere around half a million vasectomies are performed on men in the United States wishing to simply take control of their reproductive life. It might be at the request of a spouse or significant other, or it could be a decision they enter into on their own. Whatever the reason, some of those men eventually realize that they gave away something they want back. Most doctors performing this procedure tell their patients that it is permanent and cannot be repaired. Some doctors however, like David S. Wilson, understand that this is not so in many cases.
Dr. Wilson has performed more than 3,000 low-cost vasectomy reversal surgeries since he opened his practice in Fort Gibson, Oklahoma during 2005. Due to his own experience after receiving a vasectomy, Dr. Wilson wanted to help other men return to a state of fertility. "I deeply regretted my decision to have a vasectomy, realizing that I likely had kept a wonderful child or even a number of precious children from entering our family. I had tried to play God in limiting the number of children He gave us. With the reversal, I placed that decision back into His hands," he said.
During the office procedure, which was performed by a general surgeon, the surgeon suggested that Dr. Wilson, who already had a thriving practice of his own, learn to do the vasectomy reversal operation and add that to his list of specialties. At the time, he had no interest in doing so, but in a few short years, as a matter of conscience, he became convinced that he could no longer request payments from insurance companies for elective abortions. In a matter of four months after making that decision, he was forced to close the doors to his lucrative surgical practice that had provided well for him and his family for 10 years.
Several months later, he decided that he would become a vasectomy reversal surgeon and in 2005 opened his own reversal practice, exclusively dedicated to performing microscopic vasectomy reversal. In his own words, Dr. Wilson explains why he charges far less than the typical $7,000 for the procedure. "In 2005 I calculated what my costs were, but then made the professional component of the fee a matter of prayer and the Lord met me, that is He revealed what He wanted it to be. I have increased the cost once because of inflation in the last seven years, thus the $1,700 price."
As of June 29, 2013, he has performed 3,068 reversals, and given that number of men hope again that they will fulfill their dreams of fatherhood. "Every week or two I do hear someone say or write, 'We couldn't have afforded this any other way,' " he said. It is his aim to bring excellent microsurgical vasectomy reversal within the economical reach of any man who now regrets the decision to have a vasectomy within the past 9 years.
Dr. Wilson recounts the story about an ancient king who went to war. In the heat of the battle, he commanded his armies to eat nothing until evening or they would be put to death. Although this was the command, his firstborn son was unable to hear what his father said and ate from a honeycomb during the fight. That night, his actions were revealed to the king in front of his people. What may have seemed like a life-saving decision earlier that day, put his own life in jeopardy.
Having a vasectomy may have seemed to be the right decision at the time for a lot of men, but the unforeseen results have been devastating for some. Convictions and situations have a way of changing over time, and now sterility may not be as welcome as it once was. Now, it may actually be a roadblock to a more joy-filled life. Dr. David Wilson understands how so many men feel because of his own experience, and is here to help change the situation for those who wish to try.
