The State of Our Profession: More and More Patients Returning Home From Nursing Facilities
- Second in long term care series shows complexity of rehabilitative care -
WASHINGTON, Jan. 19, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Emphasizing the strides the long term and post-acute care sector has taken to accommodate a more medically complex patient population, the American Health Care Association and the National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA/NCAL) today issued the second installment of their informational State of the Long Term and Post-Acute Care series in advance of President Obama's State of the Union address next week.
"The ultimate goal of post-acute patients is to return home – and we get them there," stated Governor Mark Parkinson, President and CEO of AHCA/NCAL. "It is crucial to the future of this profession that the White House and other lawmakers recognize the role we play in American society – sending people back to their families."
The State of Post-Acute Care highlights the fact that 39 percent of Medicare patients return home within 100 days of admission, a percentage that has increased annually since 2003. This is due in large part to an increased number of facilities that offer a specialized set of services specifically designed to treat, rehabilitate and discharge patients in a short time period.
The week-long State of Long Term and Post-Acute Care series will highlight national trends in several areas of long term care. The public can "tweet" their comments on Twitter using the hashtag #ltcstate, post a comment on the AHCA/NCAL Facebook wall or share comments on YouTube by uploading a video clip and tagging it with the keyword "ltcstate."
