Scott Phillips, Apogee's Director of Software Development, defines cloud computing as "a set of pooled computer resources and services delivered over the Web." He cites Google Docs as a familiar example of cloud computing, where users can edit and collaborate on shared computer documents from any computer or smart phone.
According to Phillips, "This was an enormous task requiring hundreds of man-hours, and our team pulled it off pretty much without a hitch." He added, "This change will offer the flexibility that Apogee needs to provide a stable, secure, and robust environment where we can quickly scale our infrastructure to meet growing demand." Phillips also noted that the Cloud "will provide an additional layer of stability and security for all client websites and web-based energy applications."
The unlimited capacity afforded through the Cloud will support the heavy increase in traffic as more users visit Apogee's clients' websites and online energy applications.
Apogee CEO, Susan Gilbert, is proud of this major milestone in the company's evolution and its implications for the firm's future. "We currently serve more than 600 utility companies including some of the world's largest. Providing our applications from a cloud environment ensures we are providing the world-class service our customers require."
As Apogee adds new customers and the use of utilities' websites grows, cloud computing will provide the infrastructure needed for continued innovation and delivery of online energy solutions.
