ATLANTA, July 16, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Surgical Information Systems (SIS), a leader in perioperative information systems, announced today that The Scarborough Hospital (TSH) has selected the SIS Solution to replace its legacy surgical scheduling solution and to automate its perioperative documentation process. The SIS Solution will interface with the hospital's MEDITECH health information system and will be implemented in its two facilities in Scarborough, Ontario, Canada. TSH provides a diverse range of services across eight patient care areas at two hospital campuses and six satellite sites, and boasts demonstrable achievements in key areas of safety and quality.

"Our facilities have been documenting surgical events largely on paper, which we find extremely inefficient as it requires documentation to be entered postoperatively in a variety of disparate systems," explained Nurallah Rahim, Scarborough's Patient Care Director of Surgery. "We knew that we needed to automate our surgical documentation. The SIS Solution will help us create an electronic perioperative record that reduces duplicate data entry and provides access to the actionable, timely data we need to support our revenue and outcomes goals."
The SIS Solution will support TSH's goals of optimizing operating room performance by enabling them to create comprehensive documentation using a single patient record. The platform includes:
- Surgical scheduling including preadmission testing, supporting goals to reduce day of surgery delays and cancellations;
- Nursing documentation designed to help streamline clinical workflows and record a comprehensive nursing patient record;
- Patient tracking through all phases of care to improve communications and core metrics including on time case starts and room turnover times; and
- Role-based analytics to help promote optimized performance and improved perioperative outcomes through granular-level drill down capabilities.
SIS will provide optimal workflow directly between the SIS Solution and the hospital's Meditech health information system. Interoperability between the two systems will help improve efficiencies by minimizing data duplication and improving the accuracy of information.
"We were impressed by SIS' clinical expertise and their passion for the perioperative care continuum," stated Rahim. "Ultimately, we chose the SIS Solution to help us drive standardized documentation at our facilities and manage costs. Their robust business intelligence tool will provide access to actionable information to help us better manage OR expenses and improve our processes. All of this will support our efforts to provide better patient care to the people of Ontario."
"Using highly-integrated patient data within the OR space can help improve quality, reduce costs, and streamline efficiencies in this important environment," said Ed Daihl, SIS Chief Executive Officer. "TSH recognized the important role innovative technology plays in realizing their vision of creating a state of the art surgical environment, and took an important step toward that goal with SIS. We are honored to help them further advance OR excellence."
