The Rockefeller Brothers Fund Renews Support for Carnegie Council U.S. Global Engagement Program
NEW YORK, Jan. 11, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs is pleased to announce a one-year renewal grant from the Rockefeller Brothers Fund to support the Council's U.S. Global Engagement Program.
"How can the United States engage constructively with the rest of the world? This remains the Obama administration's core foreign policy challenge," said program director David Speedie. "We are very grateful to Rockefeller Brothers Fund for its continuing support of the Council's efforts in this crucial area."
The U.S. Global Engagement Program's focus in this next phase will be in two areas:
- U.S.–Russia relations, which are at an especially critical juncture in the wake of the prolonged ratification of the New START treaty by the U.S. Senate
- Relations with states which are deemed "of deep concern," such as Iran and Syria.
Support from the Rockefeller Brothers Fund will be applied to the second area, and reflects the Fund's interest in responsible approaches to U.S. engagement.
Recent program events include a David Speedie-moderated discussion with Ronald Bruder and Jasmine Nahhas di Florio of the Employment for Education Foundation, which addressed the urgent need for career opportunities for Arab-Muslim youth. The video, audio, and transcript are available at www.carnegiecouncil.org, along with other materials such as an interview with Michael Mandelbaum on the inevitable budget constraints on future U.S. foreign policy initiatives.
Formerly of Carnegie Corporation of New York, Speedie joined the Council as a senior fellow in June 2007. Among his achievements at Carnegie Corporation, Speedie fostered several major initiatives on U.S. relations with Russia after the fall of the Soviet Union. He also helped usher in new Corporation programs on nonproliferation of weapons of mass destruction and other international peace and security issues. He designed the U.S. Global Engagement Program at the Carnegie Council, which launched in June 2008.
