The "Reggie" at Roxbury Community College Celebrates 20 Years of Athletic & Community Engagement
ROXBURY, Mass., Aug. 26, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Roxbury Community College (RCC) is pleased to announce that Governor Charlie Baker will serve as the Honorary Chair of the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center's (RLTAC) 20th Anniversary Gala, to be held at the Center on Friday, October 2, 2015, from 6pm-12 midnight. The evening will feature an awards dinner and a live concert by noted R&B group The Manhattans.
As part of the celebration, the "Reggie" will honor the late Bob McIntyre, first executive director of the MSTCA and Frank Mooney, executive director of the MSTCA since 1997, by establishing an endowment in their names. Other honorees include Dr. Keith Motley, chancellor of UMass Boston, and Larry Ames, former assistant sports editor, Boston Globe. Long time "Reggie" employees Wavel Johnson and Rosie Clinton, and member Hazel Smalls will also be honored for their longevity and contributions over the past 20 years.
In 1995, the "Reggie" opened its doors after a long, 35 year struggle by the Massachusetts State Track Coaches Association (MSTCA) to build a state-wide facility for Massachusetts high school track and field competitions. Since 1995, the "Reggie" has served as the primary facility for hundreds of thousands of Massachusetts high school track and field athletes from across the Commonwealth, hosting 90 plus competitions annually.
In addition, the "Reggie" has been the site of 41 World and American records in track and field, and has hosted competitions at every level, including: the USA Track and Field Championships, the NCAA Track and Field Championships and the renowned Boston Indoor Games, featuring Olympians from all over the world.
The Reggie also serves as a fitness center for the community, and as a host for community youth programs and other community events.
