WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. and SANTA CLARA, Calif., Feb. 6, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- The Purdue University Online Writing Lab (OWL) and Chegg, Inc. (NYSE: CHGG), today announced an exclusive agreement to integrate Chegg's Writing tools with Purdue University's OWL content to support students on-demand whenever and wherever they need it. This partnership furthers both groups' shared goal to help students worldwide become better writers.
"This underscores the huge opportunity for traditional education institutions and technology innovators to work together to harness the power of subject matter expertise, premium content, intelligent software and the 24/7 access the internet provides," said Nathan Schultz, President, Learning Services at Chegg. "We are thrilled Purdue is taking this innovative step with our partnership. Purdue's OWL is globally recognized as the leading authority in writing resources, and by integrating their content with Chegg Writing tools, we will help students everywhere become better writers in school and in their professional careers."
"Twenty-five years ago, Purdue launched the OWL, extending the innovative learning that happens between tutors and writers on campus and establishing our commitment to online education for students beyond our campus," said Harry Denny, Associate Professor of English and Writing Lab Director. He added, "By partnering with Chegg, we continue our forward-looking approach to instruction, advocacy, and research around writing and continue to offer this free resource to writers who come to us, literally from schools, businesses, and governments all over the world."
Writing skills are important to employers even in fields like technology and engineering where strong communications skills are recognized as critical for effective leadership and positive team collaboration. In its Job Outlook 2019 report, The National Association of Colleges and Employers found that written communication tops the list of employers' most desired skills.
The Purdue OWL and Chegg partnership aims to address the demand for quality writing and communications skills that align with workplace success. Chegg currently provides more than 30 million students with AI-driven technology to help with citations, grammar and writing improvements, and accidental plagiarism prevention. Through their combined reach and expertise, Purdue OWL and Chegg believe they can help students become better writers on a massive scale.
Chegg's writing tools will now integrate OWL's rules and standards in order to teach students to become better writers. Students will upload their documents and receive AI-enabled instant feedback on grammar, spelling, and how to write more effectively as well as access resources from the OWL on any aspect of writing and at any stage of its development. In this dynamic learning experience, students will receive immediate feedback, with deep context and rich examples.
Additionally, faculty, staff and students from the Purdue Writing Lab and the College of Liberal Arts will provide expertise, insight, and feedback to Chegg on product development and student writing needs which will help shape Chegg's innovative solutions driven by AI and technology.
