CHICAGO, Nov. 16, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Peace Corps and The Chicago School of Professional Psychology (TCSPP), one of the leading nonprofit universities devoted to psychology, and related behavioral health sciences, have signed a Memorandum of Agreement to launch a new Paul D. Coverdell Fellows Program with The Chicago School's Online M.A. in International Psychology Program, effective January 2017.
"We are delighted to partner with TCSPP to support our returned Volunteers as they pursue higher education and continue their commitment to service," said Peace Corps Director Carrie Hessler-Radelet. "Communities are moved forward by the selflessness of Volunteers, and returned Peace Corps Volunteers have unique skills and experiences to offer their local communities."
The Coverdell Fellows Program provides opportunities for Returned Peace Corps Volunteers (RPCVs) for graduate school. All students in the program will complete internships in underserved communities in the U.S. while earning their degree, enabling them to expand upon the skills they've developed as volunteers in the Peace Corps. RPCVs who have completed their Peace Corps training and service oversees satisfactorily, and who meet The Chicago School's admission requirements are eligible to enroll in the Online M.A. International Psychology Program and will receive a 10% reduction in tuition.
"We're proud to partner with the Peace Corps to benefit both students and underserved communities, and believe that the Coverdell Fellows Program at The Chicago School will be a great asset for students who want successful careers in international psychology," said Breeda McGrath, Ph.D., dean of Academic Affairs, Online Campus and department chair, International Psychology. "Like the Peace Corps, our goal is to prepare students to excel as leaders who are sensitive to cultural differences and are prepared to promote social justice in an increasingly globalized world where many are forgotten and disenfranchised."
In addition to the internships completed through The Chicago School's applied professional practice program, Fellows will have the opportunity to participate in the International Psychology Program's unique International Field Experience programs to help expand their cultural competency.
"There is no question that the Coverdell Fellows Program is a perfect match for The Chicago School. This opportunity dovetails wonderfully with our goal that students be engaged and active participants in the communities in which the University resides, as achieved through our Engaged Professional Model of education," explained Viviane de Castro Pecanha, Ph.D., program lead, M.A. in International Psychology Program.
