The Original Farmers Market In LA Celebrates 80th Anniversary In Historic Photo
LOS ANGELES, Dec. 10, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Nearly 100 of the shopkeepers, employees, management and facilities staff of the beloved Original Farmers Market gathered beneath their iconic clock tower for the taking of an historic photo. The photo marked the closing out of The Market's 80th anniversary.
Since The Market opened in 1934, no such photograph has ever been attempted. Members of the Gilmore family, who have owned and operated The Market from its first day, were on hand, marking the fifth generation of that family's management of the famous landmark property.
The heart and soul of this popular destination are the shopkeepers, many of whom represent multi-generational families as well and were there for the historic event. Ages of those in the photo range from above 90 to late teens.
The Original Farmers Market is visited by millions of people every year, making it the number one tourist attraction in Los Angeles. It's one of the few gathering spots in L.A. where locals and tourists meet. Thought of as a wonderful outdoor grocery store for locals, The Market features the best in meats, poultry, produce, wines, cheeses, baked goods, desserts and more. There are also retail establishments, including one of the city's last independently owned toy stores, Kip's Toyland, as well as fashionable clothing and jewelry stores, larger chain stores such as Sur La Table, ZARA and Dylan's candy all help make The Market an exceptional experience. It's been that way since 1934.
