The New Yorker Launches the GOINGS ON App for Apple and Android Mobile Devices
NEW YORK, Aug. 8, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The New Yorker's GOINGS ON mobile app, a guide to New York City culture from the magazine's staff, including some of the best critics in the world, is launching today. The app, which is free of charge, is available for Apple and Android mobile devices. GOINGS ON is a daily, digital version of the magazine's noted Goings On About Town section, which comprises listings and capsule reviews of movies, art, night life, music, dance, theatre, readings and talks, and restaurants. The app includes all listings from the print edition, and much more.
The GOINGS ON app's extended listings are browsable by category (movies, art, night life, music, dance, theatre, readings and talks, and restaurants); all events can be filtered by date and location; and interactive maps show users event and restaurant locations. Stars are used to highlight events that the Goings On staff think are worthy of special attention. Additional event information is provided for each venue. Listings and recommendations can be saved in a favorites file and shared via e-mail, Facebook, Twitter, and Foursquare.
In addition to the listings, the app offers special recommendations by the magazine's celebrated writers and artists. There are four audio tours: you can walk with Calvin Trillin to his favorite restaurants in and around Chinatown, accompany Peter Schjeldahl through the Frick Collection, take a vintage shopping trip with Patricia Marx, and tour the High Line with Paul Goldberger. In the "My New York" section, the magazine's writers and artists recommend favorite spots, from Susan Orlean on the Temple of Dendur to Sasha Frere-Jones on a Williamsburg performance space called Secret Robot Project.
Daily real-time event updates and cultural news are provided by the editors of Goings On About Town via a Twitter feed to the app. And the On the Horizon section offers early word of upcoming events.
"Goings On About Town started as a single page in the magazine's very first issue, in 1925, so it's very exciting to see it, with all its vibrancy and authority, make this digital leap," Pamela Maffei McCarthy, the deputy editor of The New Yorker, who directed the app's development, said. "Now The New Yorker's New York can easily go wherever our readers go, whether they're walking down Twenty-third Street or strolling the Brooklyn waterfront."
The GOINGS ON app is supported by MasterCard.
