The New Economy is the YouEconomy: SUCCESS Magazine Identifies Iconic Movement in Today's Workforce
Special, expanded August issue dedicated to the noticeable shift in the workplace and why people are opting out of the traditional economy and rapidly joining the YouEconomy
DALLAS, July 12, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- The SUCCESS August issue presents its most groundbreaking issue to date, dedicated to the YouEconomy. SUCCESS dives into why freelancing and consulting are becoming the new normal, shares how readers can shift from being employees to micro entrepreneurs, and even provides a "get-it-together" guide for figuring out what to do with your life and creating a satisfying, passion-filled career. The magazine also features insight from people who are making waves in the YouEconomy, including Mel Robbins, Tony Robbins, Gary Vaynerchuk, Mark Cuban and more. The issue is available on newsstands beginning July 12.
The days of working up the corporate ladder are over as cubicles become emptier and family members and friends are mysteriously making more money and having more time on their hands. Enter the YouEconomy: as people continue to opt out of the traditional 40-hour (or more) work week, they are joining a global network of people who are taking the future of work into their own hands by sharing resources and technology, taking on side gigs for additional income, creating freelance opportunities, and more.
To showcase the impact of the YouEconomy movement, SUCCESS partnered with Harris Poll to conduct a survey. Surveying 2,026 U.S. adults ages 18 and older, the online poll asked participants a variety of questions, such as the types of work they've participated in the past 12 months (freelance, direct selling, etc.), whether the work was a primary or supplemental source of income, how frequently they personally hired independent contractors, purchased direct sales products and goods, etc., and more.
Among the findings: One-third of U.S. adults have earned income in the YouEconomy in the past 12 months, and for a majority of adults, these earnings are a supplemental source of income. In addition, about four in ten adults have used, hired, rented or purchased a listed YouEconomy service in the past 12 months.
Renowned economist and best selling author Paul Zane Pilzer projects that by 2020, that number will rise to more than half of all U.S. households. "An astonishing 47 million more adults will join the YouEconomy in just the next five years," Pilzer says. That means half of everyone living in the United States will be earning money through the YouEconomy in just five years.
"The 9-to-5 environment is decreasingly becoming the norm as more and more Americans are choosing to become self-reliant by following their passions and taking the initiative to change their lives," said Josh Ellis, Editor in Chief, SUCCESS. "We realized that while this phenomenon has been on the rise, no one was defining what it is. After taking matters into our own hands and doing the research, we coined the movement as the YouEconomy and are pulling tools and resources together to help those who are currently participating or those who want to participate become successful in their endeavors, like SUCCESS has been doing for our readers for over 100 years."
"Technology has completely revolutionized the way we do business," said Mel Robbins, Contributing Editor, SUCCESS, CNN Contributor, and author of "Stop Saying You're Fine." "The YouEconomy is for absolutely any one with the desire to achieve all the personal and career goals they have imagined. If you have a computer and internet, you can participate in the YouEconomy. If you want more out of your life, if you want to do better, then you need to look into the YouEconomy. If you are willing to do the work every day, everything about the YouEconomy will work for you. All you need is passion, some sort of skill that you can market, and to sustain the focus and determination you had the day you started. You can create a life that you want, and use the infinite amount of resources that are available to your advantage."
More and more people are joining the ranks of the YouEconomy for varying reasons, applying their talents, skills, personalities and time to create a unique life for themselves. Companies like Uber, Etsy, Task Rabbit and direct sales companies have taken notice and are feeding this trend by providing people
with opportunities to garner additional income or even to transition to a full, yet flexible career path. Millennials especially are quick to adopt the technology opportunities of the YouEconomy and make up 51 percent of the workforce. The population is diverse, with 55 percent being racial and ethnic minorities, and while 61 percent are male, women are not only participating as individual providers, but also founding YouEconomy companies.
To heighten awareness of the YouEconomy and to make tools and resources readily available for those already participating and those who want to, SUCCESS is sharing content in multiple ways, including:
- New landing page on its website that specifically features YouEconomy-relevant content (www.success.com/youeconomy)
