The National Academy Presents The Paradox of Sculpture now through May 3, 2014

NEW YORK, April 23, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Rarely-seen early works by iconic American masters Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, John Chamberlain, Jim Dine, Roy Lichtenstein, and Jeff Koons are on view at The National Academy, now thru May 3^rd.  The Paradox of Sculpture juxtaposes pivotal early works by the art world's biggest names, alongside debuts by exciting new voices honing their talents at the Academy.  Highlights from the renowned figures include Emballages de Revues, an early wrapped magazine by Christo from 1962, the deflated balloons of Warhol's Inflatable Silver Cloud Pillow from 1966, and Rauschenberg's unfolding cardboard boxes French Fried/Captiva Tile from 1971.  More recent show stoppers include Jeff Koons' Inflatable Flower Sculpture from 2000.  Debuts of note are Tess O'Dwyer's aerial triptych in bronze Incest: Remnants of Violence, Jos Stumpe's Keep Me Balanced, a work of concrete and steel, and Mary Mattingly's whimsical Head over Heels in painted aluminum. The juxtaposition of the ultra-famous and the yet-to-be-known creates the show's dynamism.  The show, curated by Filippo Fossati and Maurizio Pellegrin, is free and open to the public.

The National Academy, founded in 1825, celebrates the genius of American culture from the Romantic Age to the Digital Age. It is the only organization that integrates a museum, art academy and association of American artists and architects.  Winslow Homer, George Inness, Arshile Gorky, and Willem de Kooning are among the giants who studied at the Academy.
