With its strong showing, which included best historical documentary and photography, the documentary was among the most awarded entries of the evening recognizing excellence in the field of broadcast television.
"These Emmy nominations are a great honor for this important documentary, which captures the intricate role played by John Paul in the collapse of communism and the liberation of Central and Eastern Europe," said Executive Producer Carl Anderson, who worked closely with John Paul II during his service as a White House official under President Ronald Reagan. "John Paul II understood that men and women live and die for great ideas, and, through his actions and words, brought about the rebirth of freedom on the European continent."
