PLYMOUTH, Minn., Sept. 29, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The Mosaic Company (NYSE: MOS) has been recognized today by the environmental non-profit, CDP, as a leader among Standard & Poor's 500 Index (S&P 500) companies for its actions to reduce carbon emissions and mitigate the business risks of climate change. CDP announced the achievement in the CDP S&P 500 Climate Change Report 2014, which presents new analysis linking S&P 500 industry leaders with financial outperformance.
This is the second year that Mosaic has achieved a position on both the CDP S&P 500 Climate Disclosure Leadership Index and the CDP S&P 500 Climate Performance Leadership Index. The basis of this recognition is Mosaic's 2014 CDP disclosure score of "99" out of 100 in carbon disclosure, and grade of "A" out of A – E in carbon performance—the highest combined score of any company CDP evaluated in the Materials Sector. "As a leader in the crop nutrition industry, we recognize the essential first step that fertilizers play in the global food supply chain. As such, Mosaic is committed to operating responsibly and reducing our environmental impact, which ultimately creates value for shareholders," said Jim Prokopanko, President and Chief Executive Officer of The Mosaic Company. "This recent CDP recognition is tangible evidence of our progress in reducing Mosaic's carbon footprint and addressing climate change-related risks."
Since the company's inception in 2004, Mosaic has invested in site-specific initiatives and companywide programs aimed at reducing energy use and emissions—positively impacting operating costs and environmental performance. Mosaic began disclosing information to CDP in 2010, in addition to publishing company sustainability reports since 2009.
Reducing Mosaic's Carbon Footprint to Increase Growth Opportunities:
- Reducing Energy Use by Recycling Water: Through an agreement with an industrial partner in Saskatchewan, Mosaic's Belle Plaine facility sends water to be used in a cooling process at a nearby plant. The heated water returns to Mosaic's facility to be used as part of the potash production process. This synergy allows Mosaic to reduce the amount of energy that would have otherwise been spent on heating the water while allowing the industrial partner to avoid cooling costs. In 2013, this arrangement allowed Mosaic to save approximately 34,000 GJ in indirect energy consumption with associated carbon savings.
- Generating Low-Carbon, Low-Cost Energy: In February 2013, Mosaic began full operation of an 11 megawatt per hour turbine generator for heat recovery cogeneration at the Uncle Sam sulfuric acid plant in Louisiana, which reduced the plant's energy consumption and carbon emissions in 2013.
- Using Waste Heat as Power Instead of Diesel Fuel: Mosaic's Four Corners facility used electric pumps run by cogenerated energy instead of diesel pumps to transport water from a clay settling area, saving approximately 20,000 gallons of diesel fuel and associated GHGs. By using waste heat as power, the Four Corners facility will continue to increase production while decreasing emissions.
- Lowering Emissions with Natural Gas-Powered Trucks: In 2013 Mosaic, in conjunction with a third party transportation vendor, completed the conversion to a natural gas-powered truck fleet for raw materials and finished products in our Central Florida operations. The 50 trucks have increased capacity and are powered by clean-burning CNG. Benefits of the conversion include significantly lower emissions of particulates and nitrogen oxides.
