WOODBRIDGE, Va., May 2, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- FirstLight Home Care, an award-winning provider of non-medical home care, named Woodbridge resident Cynthia English its 2019 Caregiver of the Year. English, with FirstLight Home Care of Woodbridge, was presented the accolade during an annual gala at the recent FirstLight Home Care national conference in Kansas City, Missouri.

Woodbridge resident Cynthia English has been named FirstLight Home Care's Caregiver of the Year.

Caregiver of the Year nominees were evaluated based on a variety of criteria, including dependability, advocacy, empathy, quality of service and compassion toward clients. English was nominated for the award by FirstLight Home Care of Woodbridge owners Renee and Paul Jones.

"Cynthia has never been late to work," Paul Jones said. "That might not sound so unique, but Cynthia doesn't drive. She's incredibly dependable, not only on her own shifts, but she's constantly pitching in to cover emergency shifts too. While Cynthia's dedicated to helping FirstLight clients, she also wants to make a difference in the lives of people she comes across. One day while riding the bus, she met a woman who was lost and confused. Cynthia spent several hours helping the woman find her way home. Helping others isn't just a job for Cynthia, it's a calling."

The families of clients have also been complimentary of English's caregiving approach.

"A client's son calls Cynthia 'a miracle worker,'" Renee Jones said. "His mother suffered from dementia, and she was incredibly difficult to work with, refusing to bathe, becoming combative and more. Cynthia approached the situation with calm reassurance, kindness and fierce grace and was able to connect with the mother. Cynthia even educated the staff in the facility in which the mother lived on ways to approach dementia. Thanks to Cynthia, this woman was able to find someone who understands.
