OSLO, Norway, May 23, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --
Make the most of your holiday this summer; go to Norway where the sun never sets.
Norway enjoys a special light during the summer, as it never goes dark. Then there is the midnight sun, observed anywhere above the Arctic Circle, which features high on the list of travellers to Norway who wish to experience 24 hours of sunlight.
At the Arctic Circle in the county of Nordland, you can see the midnight sun from 12 June to 1 July; at the North Cape in Finnmark you can see it from 14 May to 29 July; and at the North Pole the sun does not set for six months.
- Come to Norway this summer and witness nature's own gala performance. In the winter the northernmost parts of Norway tempt travellers with the Northern Lights but during the summer months the Midnight Sun is a unique nature experience you don't want to miss, says the director of tourism in Norway, Per-Arne Tuftin.
See the light
The North Cape is by many considered the best place in Norway to watch the midnight sun. As continental Europe's northernmost point, at latitude 71°10°21°, the North Cape is a special place - as well as one offering many good photo opportunities. Do not miss the Lofoten and Vesterålen islands, while Hammerfest, 'the world's northernmost town', and Tromsø are good alternatives for those preferring a more 'urban' setting.
Tee off into the night
Make the most of the day-long sun, and enjoy what nature has to offer. What about teeing off under the midnight sun at the world's northernmost 18-hole golf course? Or joining the world's northernmost marathon arranged every year in Tromsø, The Midnight Marathon, where runners from around the world meet to compete at night, in broad daylight.
Many take the opportunity to hike under the midnight sun. The unique light lends the mountains a magical glow late in the evening or early in the morning - perfect for those seeking solitude.
The fish bite best at night, according to local lore. So fishing under the midnight sun is not just a great way to take in the special light, it is most definitely a good time to catch fish too.
Norway's long coastline makes for exciting cruise opportunities under the Midnight Sun. Among the most popular ports of call in Northern Norway are the North Cape, Svalbard and the Lofoten Islands.
