The Maker of Quilted Northern Soft & Strong® and Susan G. Komen for the Cure® Celebrate 'Quilted Northern Soft & Strong Champions' in Chicago
Georgia-Pacific Celebrates All Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® Volunteers
CHICAGO, Sept. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- The maker of Quilted Northern Soft & Strong® and Susan G. Komen for the Cure® are teaming up for the seventh year to celebrate individuals in Chicago and encourage them to become Quilted Northern Soft & Strong® Champions. As an official sponsor in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure®, Georgia-Pacific, the maker of Quilted Northern is celebrating volunteers at the upcoming Komen Race for the Cure on Sept. 25, 2010.
With more than 100,000 volunteers participating in Komen Races across the country, volunteers serve as the backbone of the series, helping to put on more than 120 Race events each year. Georgia-Pacific recognizes the hard work and dedication of the volunteers and created the Quilted Northern Soft & Strong® Champions campaign to recognize Race volunteers and everyone else that lends a helping hand in supporting Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Whether it's working at a Race or leaving an encouraging note for loved ones online, anyone can be a Quilted Northern Soft & Strong® Champion.
The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® is the largest series of 5K runs/fitness walks in the world, with 1.5 million participants each year. The Komen Race for the Cure Series raises significant funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer, celebrates breast cancer survivorship and honors those who have lost their battle with the disease. In 2010 and 2011, Georgia-Pacific has committed to donating $225,000 to Susan G. Komen for the Cure®.
Locals Judy and Stacey Leonard, a mother-daughter team, are on a mission to find a cure for breast cancer. Judy, who was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 52, endured four rounds of chemo, radical mastectomy and 38 rounds of radiation through the course of one year. Today, Judy and Stacey are thankful to have the opportunity to support the Susan G. Komen Chicago affiliate together and are always the first to roll-up their sleeves.
"I hope my support and activism to find a cure spreads the word about breast cancer and educates women that all breast cancer does not start with a lump," said Judy. "Inflammatory breast cancer is aggressive and often misdiagnosed or missed in its early stages. I am one of the lucky ones and want to make sure women have the information I didn't have."
"At Georgia-Pacific, we are excited about our seventh year as a sponsor in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® Series and wish to celebrate all those who bond together to help support and honor those affected by breast cancer," said Anna Umphress of Georgia-Pacific. "To show our commitment to finding a cure, we are the official sponsor of volunteers of over 120 Komen Race for the Cure events held in the U.S."
