The Lockwood Group Team Member Recognized for Heroic Action
STAMFORD, Conn., Aug. 1, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- After a long day of client meetings, one of The Lockwood Group's Senior Scientific Directors, Malik Cobb, PA-C was on his flight home with colleague Sue Goldberg when the unexpected happened. Within 1 hour of the 5.5-hour flight across the country, a flight attendant requested medical support for a passenger in distress.
Without hesitation, Cobb jumped up to tend to the passenger experiencing chest pain. When the passenger shared that just 3 months prior he had experienced a myocardial infarction (MI) and had undergone a cardiac procedure, Cobb knew this was a potentially life-threatening situation. Due to Cobb's swift response to administer therapy, and commitment to remain with the passenger for the duration of the flight while in communication with medical professionals on the ground, an emergency landing was avoided, and the passenger was turned over to the EMS team safely upon arrival in their final destination.
Reflecting on the experience, Cobb remarks, "I didn't think twice and I would expect nothing less from any other healthcare professional (active or retired) if I, or one of my family members, were in distress. In the privacy of the rear cabin where the gentleman was brought when he developed chest pain and shortness of breath, I promised that I would not leave his side until we landed and turned him over to EMS. With the uncertainty of this being a true cardiac event or perhaps some angina due to his anxiety of flying after experiencing an MI 3 months ago, just wanted him to be at ease and let him know that someone truly cares."
Lockwood Account Director, Sue Goldberg, who was traveling with Cobb nominated him for a Lockwood RISE Award, recognizing his demonstration of core Lockwood ethos including Generosity, Character and Morality. Said Goldberg, "I'm honored to consider Malik a colleague and a friend. He didn't hesitate to help a stranger without considering the consequences. He is special in every way."
EMS on the ground confirmed that the treatment approach Cobb took during the flight was the right thing to do, and the passenger's EKG taken at the gate happened to be unremarkable. The flight attendants were grateful, and the passenger was beyond thankful.
