SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 26, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Greater Bay Area chapter will host the Pacific Union Leukemia Cup Regatta on Oct. 21-22, 2017 at the Corinthian Yacht Club and the San Francisco Yacht Club in Tiburon, California.
The Leukemia Cup Regatta VIP Gala, presented by Hannig Law, will take place on Oct. 21 with special guest speaker Dr. Dean Ornish. The fundraiser will continue on Oct. 22 with the Pacific Union Leukemia Cup Regatta sailing competition and festivities at the San Francisco Yacht Club. Celebrating its 12th year, the Bay Area event has raised more than $7 million to support LLS's mission to find a cure for blood cancers and improve the quality of life for patients and their families.
With the support of Pacific Union and other sponsors, sailors from around the Bay Area will raise more than sails to honor local blood cancer patients and survivors, who will be recognized as "honorary skippers," and sailors all of levels are encouraged to fundraise, participate, and attend the two-day event. This year's honorary skippers include, Robert Groenke, Douglas Holmes, Drake Jensen, Steve Johnson, Chris Kostanecki, Rhett Krawitt, Brit Lacey, Christopher Laub, and Lynn Spiller. This year's campaign kicked off on April 26, 2017 at the SFYC with guest speaker Dr. Babis Andreadis, hematologist at University of California, San Francisco Medical Center.
Also joining the lineup of honorary skippers is lifestyle blogger and actress, Brittany Daniel, best known for her role in the television series "Sweet Valley High" and the film, "Joe Dirt." Daniel is a cancer survivor of Non Hodgkins Lymphoma, and a first-time participant in the regatta. Daniel will be joined by her husband, Pacific Union real estate professional, Adam Touni.
On Oct. 21, the third annual Perkins Challenge will launch from the St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco at 12 p.m. A sailing competition among prominent Bay Area companies to show united support in seeking a cure for blood cancers, the event will feature corporate teams of four competing on J/22 class sailboats to win the Perkins Trophy, named after the late Honorary Chairman Thomas Perkins. The trophy will be presented to the winning team at the VIP Gala that evening at the Corinthian Yacht Club.
On Oct. 22, the Pacific Union Leukemia Cup Regatta will begin with a sponsor breakfast at 10 a.m. at the SFYC, and boats will board at 11:30 a.m. This year, the event will feature a Poker Run event for nonracing powerboats, which will tour seven yacht clubs around the Bay to collect the best poker hand. The participating yacht clubs are Encinal, Golden Gate, Oakland, St. Francis, Sausalito, Corinthian, and San Francisco. Also, honorary skippers, spectators, and sponsors will watch the races from a beautiful yacht. All guests are invited to return to SFYC for the awards celebration and a barbecue at 4 p.m.
