OTTAWA, April,2 2015 /CNW Telbec/ - The Board of Directors of the Legacy of Hope Foundation (LHF) is pleased to announce that Carlie Chase has been hired as Executive Director, effective April 1, 2015.
Ms. Chase is an accomplished executive who brings with her a wealth of experience in the not-for-profit sector. She comes to Legacy of Hope from her previous position as Director of Initiatives at the Wabano Centre for Aboriginal Health in Ottawa, Ontario. While at Wabano, Ms. Chase led the fundraising campaign that enabled the construction of the Centre's new building that has been referred to as a "jewel" by the media and that is a cultural touch point for thousands of urban Aboriginal people. Most recently, Ms. Chase was the Director of Partnerships at Reconciliation Canada.
"We needed to engage a candidate who understands the importance of educating Canadians about the residential school system that existed in this country and the negative effects that are still being felt by Indigenous individuals and communities," said Richard Kistabish, President of the Legacy of Hope Foundation.
"It was also essential to ensure that our new Executive Director have leadership skills and a strong, proven track record in building complementary partnerships. We know Ms. Chase possesses the perfect combination of these attributes and is a strong asset for the Legacy of Hope Foundation," he said.
As a member of the Secwepemc Nation in British Columbia, and the first of her family not to attend residential schools, Ms. Chase has an integral understanding of the work the Legacy of Hope Foundation has yet to do.
"I am honoured to accept this position and to be part of the new narrative that is being created in this country. Our shared dark history is being changed to one of hope, where indigenous wisdom is the foundation," said Ms. Chase.
"Education is the key to this change. As the Truth and Reconciliation Commission nears the end of its mandate in June of this year, I am deeply aware of the great responsibility I have to lead the organization into the future and to ensure that education and reconciliation are at the forefront of Canada's consciousness."
The Legacy of Hope Foundation is a national Aboriginal charitable organization whose purposes are to educate, raise awareness and understanding of the legacy of residential schools, including the effects and intergenerational impacts on First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples, and to support the ongoing healing process of Residential School Survivors. Fulfilling this mandate contributes towards reconciliation among generations of Aboriginal peoples, and between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people in Canada.
The LHF fulfills this mandate by: working in partnership with First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples, communities and organizations across Canada; and undertaking communications, research and policy activities that support the development and implementation of our educational programming. All of these activities are informed by the experiences and stories of Residential Schools Survivors, their families and communities.
