Marintec China 2013
Press Conference
Good morning and thank you for coming to this press conference for Marintec China 2013. I'm speaking on behalf of the co-organisers of Marintec, who are UBM Asia and the Shanghai Society of Naval Architects and Ocean Engineers. We are also very happy to have the continuous, solid support of senior Chinese government officials and the leading maritime associations of China and Europe. So indeed, welcome and thank you to all of the supporters, sponsors and partners of Marintec China 2013.
Marintec China, at the SNIEC in Shanghai, is sponsored by China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology; the China Ministry of Transport; the Shanghai Municipal People's Government. And co-sponsored by the China State Shipbuilding Corporation; the China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation; the China Association of the National Shipbuilding Industry and the Chinese Society of Naval Architects & Marine Engineers.
As everyone knows, the shipbuilding market felt a heavy impact from the global downturn. Even in the world's leading shipbuilding nations of China and South Korea, we face huge challenges. According to Bloomberg, 38% of Chinese yards were not successful in obtaining contracts for new vessels last year. So the government's recently announced three-year plan for our industry is most welcome and timely. By encouraging increased funding support for shipyards, the plan will build optimism, promote mergers and stimulate demand, especially from the offshore oil and gas sector.
When we face such enormous challenges, it's important to maintain confidence and keep a high profile. Marintec China offers the most outstanding opportunity for showcasing new technologies, demonstrating innovation and meeting the leaders of our industry. With its 17th edition this December, Marintec China will once again be Asia's most significant biennial maritime trade fair. Our show was recently named one of the top Branded Exhibitions in Shanghai and this year's show will be bigger than ever before.
With over 50,000 visitors and 1,650 exhibitors from 87 countries in 2011, Marintec China is clearly the must-attend event for the maritime sector. This year, our exhibitors list will include all our loyal friends from Europe, the US and Asian countries as well as first-time exhibitors, including some from Australia, Iceland and India.
Once again, concurrent with Marintec China, we will host the Senior Maritime Forum. This 4-day conference brings together shipbuilding's thought leaders at the Kerry Hotel Pudong, under the heading "Green Technology, Transformation, Breakthrough". There will be considerable opportunities for lively discussion, as well as high-profile keynote speakers and exceptional networking. Incidentally, this year all Marintec China visitors will be able to download and use our new mobile app, which visitors can conveniently access to show news and search exhibitors' information.
Thank you once again for joining us today and we look forward to meeting you again in Shanghai in December!

Marintec China 2013
Press Conference
6 September 2013
Respected Mr Michael Duck, Respected Chairman, Friends, Ladies and Gentlemen:
Good morning,
First of all, please allow me, on behalf of the Shanghai Society of Naval Architects and Ocean Engineers (SSNAOE), to express my heartfelt thanks to all of you for your dedicated support to Marintec China, and for your kind attendance to the Press Conference today. It is our expectation that through your great efforts in deepening promotion and transmitting messages, more professionals in the maritime industry, and more friends from all walks of life will be attracted to all kinds of activities of Marintec China 2013. We would be grateful if the journalists here could cover and report the event with all the enthusiasm it deserves.
Now I would like to take this opportunity to make a brief introduction of the main features of Marintec China 2013 and the related situation of maritime industry.
1. THE CHINESE GOVERNMENT ACTIVELY COPES WITH THE DEPRESSED MARKET, AND MARITIME INDUSTRY WILL ONCE AGAIN MEET THE GOOD OPPORTUNITY; THE ECONOMIC FUTURE IS NOT CLEAR, BUT MARINTEC CHINA WILL SERVE AS A PLATFORM TO HELP REVITALIZE THE CHINESE AND OVERSEAS MARITIME INDUSTRY
Due to the continuous uncertainty of the world economy, 2013 has become a challenging year in shipping market since the outbreak of the world financial crisis. With the reference of the overall forecasts of all countries, it is expected that while remaining difficult in 2013, the global ship market as a whole tends to be stable. The world demand on new building over will exceed 80 million DWT, and the turnover of three mainstream ship types accounts for 70% of the total.
At present, China's shipbuilding industry is working hard to readjust its industrial structures, to change the patterns of production, and to implement the transformation and upgrading towards the high added value and high-tech sectors, so as to cope with the ever-intensified international competition. The figures released by China Association of the National Shipbuilding Industry show the ships completed in China from January to June this year reached 20.6 million DWT. In the meantime, China accepted new ship orders of 22.9 million DWT, an increase of 113.2% over the same period of the previous year, of which the orders for export ships were 21.04 million DWT, an increase of 163.3% over the same period of the previous year. By the end of June, the orders on hand were 108.98 million DWT, of which the orders for export ships amounted to 95.14 million DWT. According to the statistics from Clarkson China's ship completion, new ship orders and orders on hand made up 39.1%, 44.2% and 43.1% of the world market share respectively.
For a long period of time, the Chinese government has been paying great attention to the development of the shipbuilding industry. The 18th Congress of Communist Party of China particularly worked out a magnificent plan for building an ocean power. The Chinese leader recently stressed that to build an ocean power is an important part of building a socialist country with the Chinese characteristics. Not long ago the State Council has unveiled "Implementation Programs on Speeding up Structural Readjustment and Promoting Transformation and Upgrading of Shipbuilding Industry (2013 -- 2015)". This is another important strategy adopted by the Chinese new government to stimulate the stable growth of the shipbuilding industry by means of readjusting the structure and pushing forward the reform. The high value paid by the top authority of the Chinese government and the issuing of "Implementation Programs" have not only indicated the correct directions for China's shipbuilding industry, but also boosted the international ship market to revive.
In the past few days, the State Council approved "Program on China (Shanghai) Free Trade Zone". The construction of Shanghai Free Trade Zone will undoubtedly give great impetus to controlling the rate of decline of China's import and export trade, stabilizing the economic development, and stimulating the financial and shipping market.
Under the above-mentioned situation Marintec China 2013, one of the world top maritime events, will surely draw the worldwide attention.
2. FOLLOWING WITH THE INTEREST OF HOT ISSUES, AND GRASPING THE PULSE OF MARITIME INDUSTRY, SENIOR MARITIME FORUM CONNECTS ALL GLOBAL MARITIME ORGANIZATIONS FOR FURTHER COOPERATION AND COMMON DEVELOPMENT
Being the important part of Marintec China 2013, Senior Maritime Forum will be concurrently held from 2 to5 December.
The Main Forum, taken place from the afternoon on 2 December to 5 December in Kerry Hotel Pudong, Shanghai, which is adjacent to Shanghai New International Expo Center, will consist of 6 sessions namely "Keynote Speeches", "Shipping and Port", "Shipbuilding", "Ocean Engineering", "Marine Finance" and "Marine Equipment Technology Forum". The last session is mainly open to the exhibitors, and serves as a platform for networking between the equipment suppliers, purchasers and design institutes. In the Main Forum around 50 Chinese and overseas government officials and global maritime organizations executives, as well as the top management and experts from the famous shipping, shipbuilding, ocean engineering and finance sectors will focus on the current maritime hot issues to share their prospective and authoritative insights with the audience. (For the introduction of speakers and the titles of their presentations, please refer to the news release.).
The Technical Forum will, on the other hand, feature the future technical development, advanced cutting-edge technology and technical innovation. The scholars and experts from the Chinese and overseas maritime industry will center on the topics such as "Development and Design of Equipment and Ship Types of Ocean Engineering", "Marine Equipment Technology", "Green Technology Standards" and "Green Innovation and Development" to present their papers, and to discuss with the participants.
3. THE CHINESE AND INTERNATIONAL MARITIME INDUSTRY HAVE GREAT EXPECTATION AND SHOW THEIR LOYAL AND DELICATED SUPPORT ON MARINTEC CHINA
Presently almost all the booths in the 6 exhibition halls (W3, W4 ,W5, N1, N2 and N3) rented by the organizers with the total space exceeding 70.000 sqm have been sold out. The size of exhibition has been stably expanded this year, setting up a new record in the history.
The recent statistics reveal that 409 local exhibitors have registered for participation. By adding the pavilions of Ministry of Transport, China State Shipbuilding Corporation, China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation, Nantong Area and Zhoushan Area, the total space required has exceeded the available net space of W3, W4 and W5. From 24 April all new applications have been put in the waiting list, and as of 30 August over 50 companies were in the list. We would like to take this opportunity to urge the ambitious clients to register the exhibition as early as possible for the next edition, so as not to miss the chance again.
As compared with the past, you may find some changes with respect to the local exhibitors in the recent editions of Marintec China. With the rapid increase of private and local enterprises, they, by means of participating in the exhibition either in groups or individually, have occupied around half of space allocated for the local exhibitors, and become the strong supplement to the shipbuilding "National Team" formed by China State Shipbuilding Corporation, China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation and others.
With regards to the arrangement of the local exhibitors, W5 is mainly for the pavilions of Ministry of Transport, China State Shipbuilding Corporation and China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation, and W4 is mainly allocated for the pavilions of Nantong Area, Zhoushan Area and other areas. W3 features marine diesel engines, safety at sea and pelagic fishery.
Marintec China keeps improving in its specialty categorization to further raise the professional level of the show. Compared with the exhibitor's categorization of the previous edition, more efforts have been made in Marintec China 2013 to refine the categorization into 8 main groups and 112 sub-groups. Shipbuilding and ocean engineering are the main reference for categorization, and shipscrapping is added in categorization. Owing to the fact that many exhibitors are involved with marine equipment manufacturing and create a high demand on categorization of marine equipment.
The quantity and quality of visitors are another important factor for a successful exhibition. The on-line pre-registration system for the visitors was launched in late July. In addition to inviting the VIP guests, the organizing committee is planning to organize 100 to 120 technical teams to arrange the targeted visits of the exhibition. Therefore, high security and professional customer care are also one of the top priorities for the on-site management. The organizing committee will prepare the comprehensive plans which cope with the new situation and new requirements. The plan can make the timely and flexible adjustment and arrangement, so as to ensure a safe and high efficient Marintec China 2013.
In addition to those mentioned above, Marintec China particular emphasis on the information flow. Apart from the above-mentioned pre-registration system for the visitors, the system for the conference delegates, media and exhibitors will be open one after another. It helps the participants to register quickly, to access conveniently, to network with the organizers timely and to receive the updated show information completely.
Friends, ladies and gentlemen, I trust Marintec China 2013 will offer more business opportunities to the Chinese and overseas friends. Please allow me, on behalf of the Chinese Organizing Committee, to warmly welcome you to participate in this grand gathering of the global maritime industry, and sincerely expect you to give publicity to the glorious achievements of the Chinese maritime industry and the latest fruits of the maritime technologies the world over, as well as to promote the maritime exchanges and win-win co-operation between China and the rest of the world, to cope with the impact of the financial crisis and to push the more harmonious and stable development of the international maritime industry.
Thank you very much for your attention.
