The Latino Coalition Lauds Congressional Action to Block Funding for Gainful Employment Rule
WASHINGTON, Feb. 18, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- In response to passage of an amendment to H.R. 1 that will defund the Department of Education's misguided Gainful Employment regulation, Allen Gutierrez, Executive Director of The Latino Coalition released the following statement:
"The Latino Coalition is pleased to see that members of the U.S. Congress have taken steps to protect the educational rights of minority students across the country. The Gainful Employment rule would have jeopardized the ability of thousands of hard-working low-income and minority students, limiting their options in higher education. In today's economy, we cannot take any steps that will hurt the chances of our students entering the workforce successfully – and the Gainful Employment rule would have done just that.
The Department of Education must hold off implementation of this regulation until it will truly benefit students as intended. It is encouraging to see that the U.S. Congress understands that a postponement of this rule is the right path."
