The Largest African American Festival on the East Coast Features National Acts Charlie Wilson and Chrisette Michele
BALTIMORE, June 21, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Baltimore will celebrate music, life and culture at the 2011 African American Festival taking place July 2 – 3 at M&T Bank Stadium. Every year, hundreds of thousands of visitors converge on the city to enjoy family activities, food, music, art, crafts, and dance during the free, two-day festival.
The star-studded extravaganza featuring Charlie Wilson, Chrisette Michele, Noel Gourdine, and many other national musical acts will be held on Saturday, July 2 from noon to 10 p.m. and Sunday, July 3, from noon to 9 p.m. In addition to the entertainment, the African American Festival will feature health screenings, cultural foods, contests, giveaways, and much more.
For the first time in its history, the African American Festival is hosting Radio One's Stone Soul Picnic. The combination of these two powerful festivals will make this the signature event for the summer. The festival introduces the first annual Baltimore's SuperStar Contest, an American Idol-style singing competition, with the winner receiving a cash prize and a professional recording opportunity. Festival attendees can participate in a three-on-three basketball tournament, featuring NBA and NCAA players. Visitors will enjoy the beauty and harmony of a gospel contest, pitting local gospel choirs against each other for a grand prize. The festival will host Baltimore's Black Film Festival. In addition, a procession and ceremony honoring Baltimore soldiers who have served or are serving in Iraq and Afghanistan will kick off the festivities.
The African American Festival is the largest annual African American cultural event on the East Coast and has attracted over 300,000 visitors to the two-day celebration for more than 30 years. The African American Festival has become one of Baltimore's most well-attended, premier attractions for citizens and tourists alike. The event includes a variety of world-renowned and local entertainment, arts and crafts exhibits, jewelry, sculptures, ethnic and American cuisine, educational resources, and an interactive children's area. This year, the festival will continue to build on its legacy of promoting tradition, cultural awareness, and Baltimore's rich history while inspiring the future of the African American experience. The festival is presented by Coca-Cola and Baltimore's Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake and produced by greiBO entertainment.
