The Journal ONCOLOGY and Cancer Network Provide Crucial Context around CMS Decision on CT Screening for Lung Cancer
NORWALK, Conn., Nov. 10, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- UBM Medica US announces that Cancer Network, a leading online community for oncologists and others who treat cancer and the online home of the journal ONCOLOGY, offers valuable insight into the controversies surrounding the pending Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS) decision on whether to cover CT lung cancer screening for Medicare beneficiaries.
Ever since the National Lung Screening Trial (NLST) results were published in 2010, there have been sharp disagreements over how to interpret these data and what healthcare policy implications to draw from them. Perhaps most controversial of all was last April's recommendation—even though nonbinding—from the Medicare Evidence Development and Coverage Advisory Committee (MEDCAC) that CMS not cover screening for lung cancer. Whether CMS will accept MEDCAC's advice is a question whose answer is anxiously awaited.
Dr. Frederic W. Grannis, Jr, of City of Hope National Medical Center, in his "perspective" article "National Lung Screening Trial Limitations and Public Health Policy," reviews the limitations of the design of the NLST study, and of various interpretations of its data. He also compares the NLST with other screening trials, in order to facilitate more accurate consideration of the CT screening question.
Dr. Benjamin P. Levy and Dr. Daniel J. Becker, of the Icahn School of Medicine, in their commentary "The Time for Low-Dose Computed Tomography Screening Is Now: A Medical Oncologist Perspective," suggest ways in which the risk-benefit ratio of CT screening can be considerably improved, and provide evidence that the cost of implementing such a program in the Medicare population would be less than previously thought.
Finally, Dr. Barry M. Straube, who is the former Chief Medical Officer for CMS, in his commentary "CT Lung Cancer Screening: Public Healthcare Policy Guidelines Collide," provides invaluable insights into the CMS decision-making process, and highlights the key healthcare policy issues that will need to be addressed subsequent to the CMS decision.
