The Islands of Tahiti Play Host to Discovery Channel's Top Rated Shark Week Late Night Show 'Shark After Dark' Hosted by Director, Actor, Producer Eli Roth
Shoot Takes Cast and Crew to Rangiroa, Tahiti and Moorea Showcasing the Many Sides of The Islands of Tahiti
EL SEGUNDO, Calif., June 27, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- The highly anticipated Shark Week on Discovery Channel kicks off June 26 and runs through July 3 for seven nights of shark-tastic, nail-biting programming. The Islands of Tahiti played host to the cast and crew of the late night Shark Week favorite 'Shark After Dark' hosted by director, actor and producer Eli Roth. 'Shark After Dark' features celebrity guests, fans and shark experts.
Special shark segments featuring Roth swimming with sharks were shot in The Islands of Tahiti including in Rangiroa, the second largest atoll in the world and home to several shark species. Additional segments were also shot on the islands of Tahiti and Moorea.
Roth joined dive masters from TopDive and saw blacktip, lemon and tiger sharks. With 118 islands and atolls, The Islands of Tahiti offer some of the most spectacular diving in the world. Sharks are a protected species in the islands, and silvertip, whitetip, grey, tiger, blacktip, lemon, hammerhead, and mako make their home in Tahitian waters.
Rangiroa, just a one-hour flight from Tahiti, is known as "The Infinite Lagoon," as Rangiroa's coral ring creates a seemingly endless display of deep turquoise and lapis blue. Because there is no island runoff, the visibility in the lagoon is over 150 feet and the temperature a constant 80 degrees. The famous Tiputa Pass, which provides an opening to the ocean, is rich with sea life. It is known as one of the world's greatest shark dives, and those who "shoot the pass" find themselves in the deep blue with literally scores of grey, blacktip, whitetip, lemon and nurse sharks. Non-divers can try some world-class snorkeling and see schools of dolphins that gather in the pass. Roth also experienced sharks and more sharks dive sites including Avatoru Pass in Rangiroa and White Valley in Tahiti and Lemon Shark Valley and Taotoi in Moorea.
"The warm waters throughout The Islands of Tahiti offer divers a pristine location teeming with marine life from flirty clownfish to elegant rays, humpbacks and lush reefs and sharks everywhere," said Jonathan Reap, managing director for Tahiti Tourisme's office based in North America. "Our destination offers visitors a perfect mix of culture, cuisine and adventure with accommodations ranging from luxurious resorts with overwater bungalows to smaller Tahitian style B&Bs with a Polynesian touch. For scuba divers specifically, we have the largest chain of atolls in the world, visibility up to 150 feet and an abundance of protected marine life."
The project was made possible with the support of partners including, Air Tahiti Nui, Hotel Kia Ora Resort & Spa, Sofitel Moorea Ia Ora Beach Resort, Tahiti Pearl Beach Resort, TopDive and Tahiti Tourisme.
Tune in to 'Shark After Dark' on Discovery Channel weeknights June 26 – June at 11pm ET/PT. Check local listings and follow along with #SharkWeek and #TheIslandsofTahiti.
