The International Myeloma Foundation (IMF) Secures the Introduction of a Federal Resolution Recognizing March 2015 as "National Multiple Myeloma Awareness Month"
NORTH HOLLYWOOD, Calif., March 27, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The International Myeloma Foundation (IMF) – improving the quality of life of myeloma patients while working toward prevention and a cure – today commended Representative Brian Higgins (D-NY) for introducing a federal resolution (H. Res. 174) that supports the designation of the month of March 2015 as "National Multiple Myeloma Awareness Month."
Currently there are more than 225,000 people living with myeloma worldwide, and more than 110,000 new cases are diagnosed yearly, according to the World Health Organization International Agency for Research on Cancer. The resolution co-sponsors were Representatives Eleanor Norton (D-DC) and Alcee Hastings (D-FL). The resolution would add to the immense successes of patient advocates across the country, who have already received proclamations from 28 individual states, counties, and cities.
"The IMF would like to thank Rep. Higgins, as well as Reps. Norton and Hastings for their leadership in this resolution," IMF President and Co-Founder Susie Novis said. "I'm very proud of the hard work done by our advocacy team in securing this introduction."
Rep. Higgins has continuously encouraged "strong support for medical research, increasing funding to the National Institutes of Health." The IMF has worked closely with Rep. Higgins and other members of the House and Senate on legislation to equalize insurance reimbursements for cancer drugs regardless of whether they are oral or IV. The IMF believes patients should have access to the medications their physicians prescribe, and not be limited to the treatments their insurance company will reimburse.
